Scanning & Photocopy Services

University of Michigan Law School students, faculty, staff, and research scholars may request scans or photocopies of items that are owned by the Law Library.

The Law Library's scanning and student document delivery service is for research purposes. That means that we cannot scan course texts, casebooks, or study aids. If you need digital copies of portions of these materials, the Law Library has many scanners available for your use.

How to request a scan:

NOTE: If you have never logged in to your ILL account, you will need to do that first and confirm your contact information. Once you've done that, proceed through the following steps:

  1. Find the book or other item that you want us to scan by searching in the Law Library's Classic Catalog.
  2. Once you find the item, click the title to go into the record and then click the big yellow "Request a Scan" button. Clicking the "Request a Scan" button will open an ILL logon page where you will need to log in using your uniqname and UMID number. (Journals use your carrel account log in.)
  3. The scanning request form will automatically import all of the bibliographic information about the item, and you'll just need to enter the page range or chapter number that you want scanned, and any other information that will help (for example, the chapter title or number if you're requesting us to scan a chapter from a book). By default we will scan and include the citation information (title page, copyright information, etc.).

How we deliver completed scans:

We will deliver completed scans to you through your ILL account page, which is the same system you logged into when placing your scanning request. When we deliver a scan to your ILL account, you'll receive an email notification from us; that notification also has a link that you can click to go right to your ILL account. Uploaded scans will remain on your ILLiad page for 90 days unless you delete them. You'll also be able to track the status of your scanning requests via your ILLiad page.

Copyright limitations:

The amount of scanning the Law Library can provide is limited by U.S. copyright law. If your request exceeds the limits of copyright law, we will cancel the scan request and instruct you to submit a request for the physical item so you can review the material in person.
