Welcome to the Lawyers Club

As you make a decision about housing for the upcoming academic year, consider living in the residential section of the Law Quadrangle. Convenience, camaraderie, and safety are only a few of the attractions of the historic and newly renovated Lawyers Club.

Housing JD and LLM students, the Lawyers Club provides a built-in network of friends and a diverse set of neighbors. You will be able to take easy advantage of the Law School's resources as well as enjoy the community of 227 fellow law students.

In addition to the advantages of proximity and tradition, the Lawyers Club offers a lease concurrent with the law school's academic calendar. This means that your air-conditioned, fully furnished, private-bathroom space is not your obligation to sublet over the summer months. A Lawyers Club lease includes onsite dining with a 12-meal per week board contract. All rooms include full utilities and wireless Internet connection. By choosing a Lawyers Club lease, your yearly housing costs are fixed; there will be no unknowns for your budget.

About Rooms & Policies

Approaching its 100th anniversary, the Lawyers Club is an historic residence hall with generations of successful Michigan Law alumni.  A result of the beneficence of William W. Cook and Charles T. Munger, the Lawyers Club offers a once in a lifetime opportunity to live in the iconic Michigan Law Quadrangle. 

Residents of the Lawyers Club are proximate to Hutchins Hall, Legal Research, South Hall and enjoy all the benefits of the collegiate gothic structures. Completely renovated in 2013, with design by Hartman Cox of Washington DC; the Club’s private rooms with en-suite private baths house students from all three years of law school and many LLM s.  The Lawyers Club is also available as a dining option for law students who have chosen off-campus housing.  The Lawyers Club is not open for housing during summer term.

Applying to the Lawyers Club requires no distinct deposit.  Applications may be submitted at the point of acceptance to Michigan Law, but leases will be sent only after students have matriculated.   Please submit your application electronically by using this site and sending your application to LAWYERSCLUB@umich.edu 

The Lawyers Club space is completely smoke-free, pet-free (with exception to documented service and assistance animals) and provides single-occupancy spaces with contracts for the full academic term.  Dining is a required element of the Lawyers Club lease and a 12-meal per week contract is included in the lease fee.  Contract holders agree to the terms and conditions of a University of Michigan Housing contract, whose full policies may be found in the Community Living at Michigan Handbook (www.housing.umich.edu).

Application for Residence

 

Newly-Admitted Student Lawyers Club Application. 

This application is not a lease, nor does it guarantee you a space in the Lawyers Club. As The Lawyers Club fills quickly, newly admitted students are encouraged to submit an application as soon as they receive an offer of admission, even before making a seat deposit. Housing assignments are made on a first-received, first-assigned basis and will be sent to umich.edu email addresses. Please create your account and monitor its activity.

Rising 2L and 3L Students

This application is for newly-admitted students only. We regret that we will have insufficient spaces to accept applications from rising 2L and 3Ls who are not current 2019-2020 lease holders.


 

Fees/Lease

Each Lawyers Club space is assigned to incoming students on the basis of the date we receive your Lawyers Club application. You may apply as soon as you are offered admission; you do not have to wait until the submission of your enrollment deposit. The timely submission of an application will increase the likelihood of receiving a lease and your preferred room type. All spaces in the Lawyers Club provide a single, private room. Your choice of a private or semi-private bathroom will slightly impact the lease fee. The entirety of the Lawyers Club is smoke-free, as is the University of Michigan campus.

Students requiring specific accommodations for mobility limitation or other health needs are asked to note these requests on the application in advance. Please contact the Director so that we have the opportunity to meet your specific needs. Dining is a required part of the Lawyers Club lease. The annual lease fee includes 12 meals per week, with lunch and dinner served Sunday through Friday. The Club offers a diverse menu selection which includes many vegetarian entrees.  Individuals requiring special diets such as gluten-free, dairy-free, or those with specific food allergies should consult with our culinary staff before signing a lease.

Leases are written for the entire academic year and include furnished room, 12 meals per week, utilities, and wireless connectivity.

The Lawyers Club resident hall fees are contingent upon Regents' approval, are subject to change and are usually finalized during the month of June for upcoming fall/winter leases.

The Lawyers Club lease covers the law school's academic calendar and does not obligate you for the summer months.  This removes the financial burden of a 12-month lease and the need to find a summer sublet.  Your yearly housing costs are fixed; no unknowns for the budget.

*Save about $100 per month by selecting a SINGLE room with SEMI-PRIVATE bath. You'll share with only one other student. There are 34 spaces of this room type.
