Hopp, Wallace

Professor Wallace J. Hopp holds a BS in physics from Michigan State University, an MS in public policy from Washington University, and MS and PhD degrees in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan. He worked at the Department of Energy-sponsored Pacific Northwest Laboratories before spending 23 years on the faculty of Northwestern University, with a joint appointment in engineering and management. He joined the faculty of the U-M Ross School of Business in summer 2007 as the Herrick Professor of Manufacturing.

Professor Hopp serves on the Ross School's leadership team as the senior associate dean for faculty and research. His research has focused primarily on the design, control, and management of manufacturing systems. He has won a number of teaching awards, including best teacher awards at both the engineering and business schools at Northwestern and the SME Education Award, as well as research awards, including the Nicholson Prize (for best student paper in Operations Research), the Scaife Award (with Mark Spearman, for the paper with the "greatest potential for assisting an advance of manufacturing practice"), the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE)/Joint Publishers Book-of-the-Year Award (for the book Factory Physics: Foundations of Manufacturing Management), the Sargent Process Award from SME, and the IIE Technical Innovation Award. He also has been named a fellow of INFORMS, IIE, the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS), and the Manufacturing and Services Operations Management Society. He has published widely in academic literature and served as editor-in-chief of Management Science from 2003 to 2008 and as president of POMS from 2009 to 2010.

In addition to his research, Professor Hopp has been an active industry consultant whose clients have included Abbott Laboratories, Baxter, Bell & Howell, Black & Decker, Case, Dell, Ford, Eli Lilly, Emerson Electric, General Motors, John Deere, IBM, Intel, Motorola, Owens Corning, Texas Instruments, Whirlpool, Zenith, and others. His most recent research and consulting have branched beyond his traditional manufacturing expertise to include new product innovation and healthcare management.
