Madhu Anderson joined The Nature Conservancy in 2019 as Director of Governmental Relations. She also leads the Michigan chapter’s energy and climate policy initiatives. Madhu is a strategic leader with expertise in state-level regulatory and fiscal policy, and is known for her ability to drive progress in challenging environments. Prior to this role, she served as Deputy Director of the Michigan Agency for Energy focusing on state energy policy. As Michigan’s Deputy State Treasurer in the 1990s, Madhu was part of a team that reformed Michigan’s school finance system, cut residential and business taxes, restructured the public employee’s pension system, and earned Michigan a coveted AAA bond rating. Under Madhu’s directorship of CEPI, Michigan became one of the first states in the nation to offer performance metrics for over 500 school districts. More recently, as Deputy Director of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, she helped launch a recycling initiative that encouraged stewardship while stimulating economic growth.

After earning an A.B. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley, Madhu received an M.P.P from The Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan. Madhu also completed the Executive Program in Strategy and Organization at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. Madhu spends her free time with her family, throwing pottery, and training for her next trekking adventure.
