Prior to law school, Professor Brogan-Kator served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Force from 1972 to 1976. Afterward, she was the Chief Financial Officer for several businesses and earned her MBA from the University of Colorado in 1986.

Professor Brogan-Kator became the first openly transgender law student to matriculate at MLaw, and she is the immediate past Executive Director of Equality Michigan, the statewide LGBT advocacy organization. Professor Brogan-Kator and her spouse, Mary Kator, '84, founded the Rainbow Law Center to serve the legal needs of the gay and transgender populations of southeast Michigan.

Professor Brogan-Kator is currently the Senior Legislative Counsel for the Family Equality Council, a national LGBT rights organization.
