SUMMARY:Defendants operated a transnational sex trafficking ring between the United States and Mexico. Defendants compelled victims, women and girls from Mexico, to work as prostitutes in brothels in the New York City area.

The defendants smuggled the victims, who were often poor and uneducated, into the United States.  Once here,
defendants controlled the victims through threats, fraud, forced abortion, and physical violence, including sexual abuse. The women were forced to turn over almost all of their profits to the defendants.

Defendants were arrested in 2004, when Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, working on a tip from Mexican authorities, raided apartments in Queens, New York.

Other members of the prostitution ring received lesser sentences. Mexico extradited fifteen defendants, including the mother of the Carreto brothers, to the United States to stand trial.
