SUMMARY:In 1997 defendant brought an Indian woman to the U.S. on a visitor's visa that later expired. For five years the victim cared for the defendant's sick child and performed other household chores, all unpaid, with no days off. Defendant told the victim never to leave the house or let anyone in the home. When the victim requested return to India, the defendant promised to get the paperwork together, but never did. Defendant pled guilty to harboring an illegal alien and was sentenced to three years probation and a $100 special assessment. Defendant's husband was not charged, but paid the victim's return airfare and approximately $69,564 in unpaid wages, as part of a pretrial diversion.
