SUMMARY:Juan Luis Cadena-Sosa was charged with conspiring to smuggle Mexican women and girls into the United States and forcing them to engage in prostitution through intimidation, violence, and threats of physical harm. He and the others had promised the women and girls (one as young as 14) work as housekeepers or waitresses, but they instead forced the women into brothels in Southern Florida and South Carolina, after initially smuggling the women into Texas. They forced the women to work as prostitutes to pay their smuggling debts of up to $2,000 each. Women who tried to escape were beaten and rapes. Some women who became pregnant were forced to have abortions, and one was kicked in the abdomen and had a miscarriage. Cadena-Sosa plead guilty to conspiring to violate civil rights and importing and harboring illegal immigrants. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
