SUMMARY:

Defendants Gary Gates (also known as "Sweat") and Tamisha Heyward (also known as "Quilena K. Taylor") operated a sex-trafficking ring beginning in March 2001.

From March 2001-December 2003, Gary Gates recruited women and minors, some as young as 14 years old, to work for him as prostitutes in Washington, D.C. Gates beat women to ensure their compliance.

Beginning in summer 2002, Gates and Heyward moved their operation to the Internet, advertising their services through a website called "redlightspecialinc.com" and "pandorasboxinc.com." As a part of these "escort services," at least 30 women, including minors as young as 14 years old, performed sexual acts. Gates provided drugs to support the addictions of some of the victims, beat the victims if they disobeyed him and sexually assaulted many of them.
