August 2010

August 6, 2010

We are entering the home stretch of major work inside Hutchins and Legal Research. Our goal is to be finished with the vast majority of work inside the buildings by the end of August and we are currently on schedule to meet that goal. We’re also in the process of setting the new façade on the upper stacks floors and beginning the foundation and steel for the Robert B. Aikens Commons. If you look east, from the bridge, you will see the stone work on the stacks building and, looking down into the pit, will see the footings for the steel supports in Aikens Commons being poured.

For this week and next:

  • Work to restore the Terrazzo flooring in the 9th floor elevator lobby will take place this Friday, August 6 and Saturday, August 7. Entrances from the stairs, stacks, elevator and corridor will be blocked for this two-day process. To get to the 9th floor main corridor offices, you will need to use the bridge from the 3rd floor of Hutchins Hall. The 9th and 10th floor stacks offices can be accessed through the stairwells.
  • Work on the fire/life safety systems in the Reading Room and Reading Room offices will begin Friday, August 6. Work in the offices is scheduled for the evening (starting at 4pm) and work in the Reading Room is scheduled for daytime.
  • Power to the faculty lounge will be partially disrupted on Monday, August 9 from 7am-noon. The lighting and dishwasher will be off, but the rest of the appliances will still work (hurray for the coffee-makers!).

A quick note to our Summer Starters—it is our practice to have only quiet work done during finals to minimize the distractions. As you get closer to the dates of exams (sorry, but they are coming…), we’ll let you know what to do if you have any concerns about noise.

Finally, if you haven’t seen them yet, be sure to check out the great new slideshows on the Construction website.
