On March 26, 2016, police in Webster, Texas arrested 24-year-old Amber Ricks after they seized pills they suspected were Alprazolam, an anti-anxiety medication.
On March 30, 2016, Ricks pled guilty in Harris County Criminal District Court to misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance. She was sentenced to 10 days in the Harris County Jail.
On April 21, 2016, the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences tested the pills and determined they were Clonozapam, a sedative that is not a controlled substance.
The lab informed the Harris County District Attorney’s conviction integrity unit, which then informed Ricks’ attorney who filed a motion for a new trial.
On April 29, 2016, the motion was granted, the conviction was vacated and the prosecution dismissed the charge.
