The Allan F. and Alene Smith Law Library Addition, opened in 1981, was built below ground to preserve the visual integrity of the Law Quadrangle. Alumni, faculty, and the administration agreed that the architecture of the Quadrangle was too distinct and treasured to alter it by interposing a modern building into the grouping. The alternative solution was to build the addition underground. Designed by Gunnar Birkerts, the Law Library has received numerous awards and praise for its creative use of underground space and superb architectural design.
