Non–U.S. Citizen J.D.: Applying for Financial Aid 2009–2010

There is no financial aid deadline for entering 1Ls and all information is strictly confidential.

There are three types of financial aid for which you may qualify: merit-based scholarships, need-based grants and loans.

  • Merit-based scholarship decisions are made in the Admissions Office within two weeks of admission and do not require a separate application. In cases where no merit aid has been offered, the Financial Aid Office is occasionally able to take financial aid offers from competing schools into account.
  • Need-based grants are considered in the Financial Aid Office. If you are receiving an Admissions scholarship of $15,000 or more, due to the size of your award you will only qualify for loans and you will not be considered for need-based grants.
  • Loans are processed in the Financial Aid Office for all students applying for financial aid.

To determine if you might qualify for need-based grants, we have a simple online questionnaire for admitted students on the Admitted Students Web site. Click on Mail & Money and Financial Aid Instructions to access the questionnaire. If it appears that you may be eligible for need-based grants after completing the questionnaire, we will direct you to complete additional financial aid information on the 2009-2010 Need Access form. This tool assists in determining resources available to a student. Parent information is not required to apply for aid. If you have completed the parent information for another school, we will disregard that data.

Please note non-U.S. citizen students are not eligible for Federal Stafford loans or Grad PLUS, and private loan programs typically require a U.S. cosigner. Our non-U.S. citizen sample loan comparison chart/FAQ (PDF) provides an overview for several lenders.
