It is wise to start looking for housing in Ann Arbor as soon as you have decided to enter the Law School. A variety of housing options, both on and off campus, are available to students.
On Campus
The Lawyers Club Each year, approximately 260 law students choose to live in the Lawyers Club: Michigan Law’s residence hall, which comprises two sides of the Law Quadrangle and houses J.D. as well as graduate students. Students who live in the Lawyers Club can take advantage of its beauty, convenience, and camaraderie. With a lease concurrent with the Laws School's academic calendar, furnished rooms, a 13-meal-per-week meal plan (students who are not Lawyers Club residents may also purchase meals under a flexible Entrée Plus program.), cable TV, ethernet connectivity, and across-the-green proximity to classes and the Library, the Lawyers Club offers unparalleled access to the Law School’s resources and a network of friends and neighbors.
Lawyers Club applications are mailed to students with their offers of admission to the Law School, and are also available through the Admissions Office and on the admitted students website. Applications for residence are accepted from admitted students only. Room assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Nearly 97% of the people who live in the Lawyers Club will live in either a single or a double suite. Furnished room, all utilities, Ethernet and wireless, 13meal/week food contract for the academic period 8/26/11 to 5/5/12 will be $10,950. For a savings of $1000 per year, we also offer a limited number of economy single rooms ($9,950) which are reduced size singles.
There are no kitchenettes for student use and there is no resident parking.
Inquiries about accommodations in the Lawyers Club may be addressed to Diane Nafranowicz, Lawyers Club, 551 South State St., Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109-1208, or may be made by phone at 734.764.1116, by fax at 734.763.6732, or e-mail: nafrano@umich.edu.
Other University Housing Family housing, as well as housing for single graduate students, is offered at Northwood Community Apartments, located on North Campus, about three miles from Central Campus and the Law School. Some of these apartments and townhouses are furnished, others are not. Free and frequent University bus service is available between the two locations. The Northwood Community Apartments also offer additional resources for families, such as child care and English classes for spouses, partners, and children.
Supply is limited, so applicants are encouraged to contact U-M Housing as soon as possible. Off Campus Approximately two-thirds of our law students live in apartments and houses. Furnished and unfurnished apartments and houses may be found within walking distance of the Law School and in complexes a few miles away. The Off-Campus Housing Office, within the University Housing Office, 1011 Student Activities Building, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 48109-1316, 734.763.3164, may be especially helpful if you are apartment hunting in Ann Arbor for the first time. The housing website is a comprehensive information resource that includes extensive "real time" listings of apartments, rooms, coops, parking spaces, and a roommate matching service. The site can be searched by monthly rental fee, number of bedrooms, proximity to campus, etc. The web-based resource www.offcampus.housing.umich.edu also includes maps and a list of landlords and management companies who have met certain minimum standards.
The Law School provides an informal source for roommate matching in the spring of each year. Law students interested in looking for housing or interested in subletting their apartments while they are away over the summer or for extended periods can fill out an ad in the Law School Classifieds. The Classifieds are most active in late spring, when students search for subletters before they leave for the summer. If you would like to offer housing, seek housing, or wish to receive calls from potential roommates, complete an ad.
The Admissions Office compiles a list of available summer sublets every spring. Current students may send an e-mail to Admissions, from January 10 until February 23, describing their sublet and Admissions will make it available to incoming summer starters. Please note: All sublet leases must run until at least the day after summer exams are over. Admitted students interested in finding a roommate or shared housing may also e-mail Admissions with information about themselves and the accommodations they are seeking. The Office will compile a list and make it available to other admitted students over the summer.
