Detaining and prosecuting suspected terrorists

Seth P. WaxmanSeth P. Waxman, former Solicitor General of the United States (1997-2001) and partner with Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP will present "Terrorism in the Courts," for this year's University of Michigan Law School DeRoy Lecture. Waxman's talk will evaluate the difficult challenges U.S. courts have faced in addressing legal issues arising out of the various efforts to detain and prosecute suspected terrorists. The lecture, which will be held on October 11 at 4:30 p.m. in Honigman Auditorium (room 100 Hutchins Hall) at the Law School is free, and open to the public.

Waxman has delivered so many oral arguments in the United States Supreme Court (15 in the last three Terms), that The American Lawyer recently called him "the dominant force in the Supreme Court bar, without question." Head of the appellate practice at Wilmer Cutler, Waxman puts a particular emphasis on complex challenges involving governments or public policy issues. He has also argued Supreme Court cases involving class actions, telecommunications, environmental regulation, international litigation, mass torts, racial bias, and criminal procedure.

In addition, Waxman serves on the faculty of the Georgetown University Law Center and is chairman of Legal Affairs magazine. He also writes and lectures on topics relating to litigation, constitutional history and doctrine, the First Amendment, intellectual property, and the Supreme Court.

"Bringing an attorney of Seth Waxman's stature and experience to the Law School enhances our mission to provide the best possible legal education," says Law School Dean Evan Caminker. "We are please that Seth is able to join the stellar list of fellows, which includes Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia and Judge Koen Lenaerts of the Court of Justice of the European Communities, who have lectured here in the recent past."

The DeRoy Fellowship Program, which is supporting Waxman's visit and the lecture, was established to bring distinguished lawyers and public figures to the Law School to support its educational mission, is made possible through the Detroit-based DeRoy Testamentary Foundation.
