MICHIGAN LAW ALUMNI AND FRIENDS SERVICE DAY: MAY 1, 2010
The second annual Michigan Law Alumni and Friends Service Day took place in six U.S. cities and on one international site. Incoming 1Ls, invited to all participating sites this year, were part of the volunteer groups in Detroit, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. Service Day groups also gathered in Chicago and Washington, D.C. Team leaders at all sites were Michigan Law alumni, including Harpreet Khera, '04, and Lamont Walton, '75 (Chicago); Kelly O'Donnell, '01 (Los Angeles); Jenny Chen, '06, and Barbara Mendelson, '81 (New York); Mitoshi Fujio-White, '07, and Richard Helzberg, '65 (San Francisco); Yasmin Elias, '95, and Shelly Miller, '92 (Southeast Michigan/Northern Ohio); and Kavitha Babu, '04, and Amy Liu, '02 (Washington, D.C.). Service Day also went international. Roopal Shah,'95, coordinated a group of volunteers in Ahmedabad, India.
Projects including groundskeeping and landscaping at a zoo, cleaning up a park, serving breakfast at a women's shelter, painting city schools, preparing food to be served to seriously ill and elderly clients, and involving local youth in a street cleanup.
Service Day brings alumni together in cities around the country to celebrate Michigan Law's tradition of service. The program, which launched in October 2009, is now held annually in the spring, with the 2011 date to be announced.
