CONTINUING A LEGACY 1L Emerson Girardeau III is the recipient of the 35th annual Alden J. "Butch" Carpenter Memorial Fund Scholarship, which is awarded each year to first-year Michigan Law students who exemplify its namesake's ideals. Butch Carpenter, a former Michigan football team co-captain, died during a recreational basketball game in 1978, before he could complete his legal studies. The Black Law Students Alliance (BLSA) established the award "to promote the attributes exemplified by (Carpenter's) life and to motivate the social commitment demonstrated by his professional objectives." The award's 2013 runner-up was Adrean Taylor, with Honorable Mentions going to Geda' Jones and Christopher Burtley.
