Using the Library


Access Policy
The University of Michigan Law School welcomes researchers to the underground Law Library (the Smith Addition) to use the collection, including U.S. depository materials, for their legal research. This policy assures that seating and assistance will be available to users, and ensures a quiet research atmosphere in the Smith Addition.

General study:  Anyone is welcome study in the Reading Room, which is open for general study to all.

Circulation Policy
The Law Library is a research library and the books in the collection must be available for immediate use. Therefore, materials do not circulate out of the library. However, most books in the Law Library may circulate to offices or carrels within the Legal Research Complex if properly charged to such offices or carrels. Most materials housed in the Reserve area on Sub-2 may be charged for 4-hour use within the Addition although they may not be charged to office or carrels.

Books bearing the call number or location REF COLL, LLF (looseleaf services), RESERVES or RR may not be charged to carrels or offices.

Photocopier Information 
One copier is located on Sub-1. Three copiers are located on Sub-2 (1 in the Sub-2 copy room and 2 in the Reserve area).  One more is located on Sub-3.  Copies are 10¢ each.  To pay for copies, add value to a copier card.  Value may be added in $1.00 increments.  If you are a one-time user who needs to make less than 6 copies, you may obtain a card that will provide these copies at no cost at the Circulation Desk on Sub-2.

If these machines fail to operate or give poor copies, tell the Circulation Desk Assistant at the Circulation Desk on Sub-2.

Call Number Locator (pdf)

Carrel Information
Patrons wishing to charge books may apply for a carrel at the Law Library Circulation Desk in the Sub-2 Core area.  Books can then be charged to and kept in the carrel.  Any library user may sit in a temporarily unused carrel.

Course Reserves
Course Reserves is primarily comprised of books and materials on reserve for University of Michigan Law School courses.  Other material on reserve includes books and journals cataloged with the location "Reserve" and in-process books.

Group Study Rooms in the Law Library
There are two study rooms on Sub-3 that can be reserved for group use.  Inquire at the Circulation Desk (Sub-2 Core) for reservations.  For a map indicating the location of the study rooms and additional information see "Reservation Rules for Group Study Room" (pdf).  You may use the rooms without reserving them, but groups that have reservations take precedence. Both rooms have wireless service and electric outlets.

Rare Book Room
The Jackier Rare Book room is located on Sub-1 North.  The room is designed to be enjoyed by looking in from the outside and can be so viewed whenever the library is open.  A special book exhibit is on display in the windows of the room.

Computer Access Policy Lexis/Westlaw/Loislaw Information



Computer Access Policy
A limited number of computers are available in the Law Library for legal research. Eight terminals on Sub-1 are designated public access terminals to provide law students and pass holders access to Lexcalibur, Mirlyn, Kresge Library Catalog, U.S. government documents and other legal research materials on the world wide web. There are also Public Terminals on Sub-1, Sub-2, and Sub-3 for access to our online catalog Lexcalibur, as well as catalogs for other libraries on campus, i.e. Mirlyn and Kresge Library Catalog. 

Three terminals near the top of the green staircase in the first floor corridor are available for email and Internet use. Use of all other computers, including the computer labs on Sub-2 and Sub-3, and Lexis and Westlaw is limited to University of Michigan law students and law faculty. For more information, ask at the Reference Desk or call 734-764-9324.

Wireless access is available in the Smith underground addition, for University of Michigan law students only.

There are also Ethernet access ports located in the Sub-1 Core.  Ask at the Reference Desk for information.

Lexis/Westlaw/Loislaw Information
All University of Michigan Law School students, faculty and staff are eligible for access to Lexis, Westlaw, and Loislaw.  Lexis and Westlaw passwords are distributed within the parameters of the contracts those vendors have with the Law Library.  The Loislaw access code is distributed to new Law School students, faculty and staff upon their arrival.  Further information is available below:
