Library Hours: 8AM to midnight through Nov. 25; Open Labor Day, Sept. 1

Who should I contact?

For life-threatening emergencies of any kind: dial 911

There is a red Emergency phone in the Reading Room on the wall behind the Reading Room Desk:

  • Connects automatically to the Department of Safety’s 911 line
  • DPS dispatchers know automatically that the caller is in the Law Library Reading Room

Fire and Smoke

Leave the building immediately.

There is an emergency phone on Monroe Street near State Street. Be as specific as possible when you report the fire, e.g., “There is a fire inside the Law Library level sub-3 in the underground addition.” or “There is a fire on the 8th floor of the Legal Research Building, which is on Monroe Street.” Be clear that the fire is in the LAW LIBRARY, LEGAL RESEARCH BUILDING, not in the Law School.

Non-Emergency Assistance

Contact one of the service desks

OR

  • Dial 3-1131 to contact Security (Department of Public Safety, or DPS)
  • Call Security when you need assistance of any kind.
  • Call Security in any suspicious circumstance.

When you call:

  • Give the building name (Legal Research or Law Library) and room number.
  • Security officers will want to speak to the person principally involved

Tornado Sirens

The safest places to gather during severe weather are in the interior basement hallway on level one (near the Snack Bar) and in the sub-levels away from the lightwells.
