Who should I contact?
For life-threatening emergencies of any kind: dial 911
There is a red Emergency phone in the Reading Room on the wall behind the Reading Room Desk:
- Connects automatically to the Department of Public Safety’s 911 line
- DPS dispatchers know automatically that the caller is in the Law Library Reading Room
Fire and Smoke
Leave the building immediately.
There is an emergency phone on Monroe Street near State Street. Be as specific as possible when you report the fire, e.g., “There is a fire inside the Law Library level sub-3 in the underground addition.” or “There is a fire on the 8th floor of the Legal Research Building, which is on Monroe Street.” Be clear that the fire is in the LAW LIBRARY, LEGAL RESEARCH BUILDING.
Unable to Use Stairs
Make your way inside nearest enclosed fire stairway on your floor and wait for assistance. If possible ask someone else who is exiting (preferably a library staff member) to notify the fire fighters or security officers of your exact location.
DO NOT use the elevators.
