Women Law Students Association
The Women Law Students Association (WLSA) is the largest student organization at the University of Michigan Law School, open to students of both sexes. One of WLSA’s foremost objectives is to increase the number of female students and faculty in the Law School, and it achieves that aim through mentoring, advocacy, and outreach. WLSA also has a vital political arm whose goal is to raise student awareness on important issues, such as rape kit expenses and domestic violence.
WLSA is composed of a large general membership and several smaller committees administrated by an Executive Board. Along with the traditional positions such as President and Secretary, Executive Board positions include Admissions and Mentoring, 1L Representative, Public Service, Political Action, Faculty Hiring, Social Activities, and Fundraising. The WLSA Executive Board meets weekly, and these gatherings are open to all members.
WLSA keeps busy during the year. Apart from various social gatherings, WLSA coordinates various events such as clothing drives, public service days, and a 5k marathon to benefit charity; faculty receptions to enable students to get acquainted with their professors in a more intimate setting; job talks in which upperclassmen talk to 1Ls about their summer internships; and an annual banquet, at which the recipients of the Jenny Runkles Award are honored.
