Henry M. Newcomb was a member of the senior class of Williams College, 1856, where he studied for one year. He studied law in Detroit, 1857-59; graduated, 1860, from Law Department, Michigan University, after which he was in active practice of the law. He was circuit court commissioner of Shiawassee Co. for two terms; resided at Owosso, Mich., the heart of the copper mining region, where, of the firm Newcomb and Wing, attorneys and counselors, he held the offices of prosecuting attorney and judge of probate. Quite early in the year 1873 he removed to Ludington, Mich., where for a large portion of the time he was Collector of Customs for the Port, besides continuing practice in law, until Sept. 1882; went to Washington DC, having been appointed examiner of pensions; retired from the latter position in 1907, afterwards usually spending summers at Owosso and winters at Washington.
