Library Aquatic

In the Law School's unique below-ground library, you may feel like you're looking out from a giant fishbowl…

…or peering into one. A few law students decided to populate the "tank":

Library Director Margaret Leary explains: "For years, people have suggested that we fill up the light well between the Smith Addition and the Cook Legal Research building…

…so that people, fish, ducks, and others might enjoy the water. The idea never appealed to me: I'm much too serious about preventing leaks and damage to the books.…

…One particularly articulate student assured me that this was possible, that I could and should, but that he most certainly would.…

…And so they appeared, and there's been no leakage or damage—nothing but grins and admiration."

And, despite the stress of finals and their sense of mischief, they were polite students.
