Subprime lending the European way? Foreign-currency mortgage loans at the CJEU

Description: From 2004 on, seemingly affordable mortgage loans deploying currency speculation have been marketed broadly in Central and Eastern European countries. A few years later, as currency exchanges rates turned against them and boilerplate clauses produced unfavorable effects, distressed borrowers rushed to courts in search of remedy. In a series of judgments between 2014 and 2019, the CJEU made a fundamental contribution to protecting mortgage borrowers in the European Union.

Lunch talk by Professor Piotr Tereszkiewicz (Associate Professor of the Institute of Private Law, Jagiellonian University Cracow, Poland).
