 Voting Rights after Shelby County

Date: 11/19/2013
Time: 11:50 AM to 12:50 PM
Contact: Ray,Collin David

Location: Hutchins Hall 220

Description: Last term, the Supreme Court struck down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, freeing states previously covered by the statute to change their election laws without oversight by the federal government. Brennan Center counsel Jonathan Brater will discuss the impact of voter ID, third-party registration, and other restrictive laws on low-income and minority voters; approaches and prospects for fixing the VRA; and ongoing efforts to affirmatively protect the right to vote outside of the VRA. Join the Michigan Election Law Project for a lunch discussion to learn about the uncertain state of election law in the U.S. and how you can help defend the right to vote. The event is generously co-sponsored by the Michigan Poverty Law Program.
