Leiden University, the Netherlands

Since 1991, the University of Michigan Law School has had a semester study abroad opportunity with Leiden University Law School in the Netherlands, which allows for up to 10 Michigan students per academic year, either in the fall term or winter term, to pursue a semester of law study at Leiden.

Study at Leiden University offers several advantages: education in a civil law system and a comparative perspective of the U.S. and European approaches both to domestic and international law, and exposure to European Community law. Classes are conducted in English at Leiden, and they cover three major themes: Foreign and Comparative Law, International and European Community Law, and Legal History. Classes are comprised of students from all over Europe and of Dutch students. It is the experience of attending a foreign law school with students from other countries that we hope will be most valuable in developing a comparative understanding of legal systems.

More information may be obtained from the University of Leiden's Web site at www.leiden.edu/studyabroadinLeiden/.

Interested students must comply with the General Guidelines for Semester Legal Studies Abroad [PDF], which contain important information, including how to apply. Please also read the Guidelines for Semester Study Abroad at Leiden University, the Netherlands [PDF].
