Student Eligibility
Only students in the third, fourth, or fifth semesters of Law School are eligible for an externship program. In other words, the externship program is open only to second- or third-year law students who would have at least one semester of study at the Law School following completion of the program. There is a presumption against any program in the student's last semester in Law School; a final semester program may be approved only on the student's showing good reason for not undertaking the program in an earlier semester, and on showing particularly important educational benefits to be gained from the program.
Only students in good standing are eligible for externship programs. In deciding whether to approve an externship program, the members of the Curricular, Co-curricular, and Pedagogic Issues Committee may take into account the student's academic performance at the Law School.
The Curricular, Co-curricular, and Pedagogic Issues Committee will more than likely not approve a proposal from a student who has two or more outstanding Incompletes on their transcript at the time the proposal is submitted. Students with two or more Incomplete grades who receive permission from the Committee to participate in the externship program will be required to resolve at least one of the Incompletes before the start of the externship term. Students are not permitted to enroll in an externship with more than one Incomplete grade on their transcript at the time of their departure.
