Overseas Travel Information

OVERSEAS TRAVEL
Students traveling overseas for activities related to the University, such as externships, research, participation in sponsored projects or programs, or other business should register their travel information with the online U-M Travel Registry. The Travel Registry helps facilitate communications in the event of emergency situations that arise for those traveling abroad.

OVERSEAS TRAVEL WAIVER
Students traveling overseas for an externship must complete an Overseas Travel Waiver.

Students are strongly encouraged to check the University's Travel Information and Registration website, as well as the website of the US State Department for International Travel Warnings. If a travel warning has been issued for the country where the student has proposed an externship, an additional University travel waiver is required.

overseas health insurance
The University offers a health insurance plan which provides for treatment of a range of conditions that might occur while traveling abroad.

HTH Worldwide Travel Abroad Health Insurance is available for purchase by law students traveling abroad. While it is not required, it is strongly recommended. Before traveling abroad, students are encouraged to consult with their health insurance companies to determine whether they will be covered while overseas.

While the HTH Worldwide insurance plan will provide some continued coverage in the United States following a condition or injury abroad, this coverage is extremely limited. In addition to purchasing this insurance for coverage overseas, students should maintain U.S.-based health insurance plans.

The HTH Insurance may be purchased through the University's International Travel Oversight Committee. Information about the provisions and benefits offered by the HTH Worldwide Insurance, including frequently asked questions, is available as well.

temporary resident permit (visa)
Students selected for an externship placement in South Africa will need to apply for a temporary resident permit since the duration of the externship is greater than 90 days.  Information regarding visas/temporary resident permits may be found on the South Africa Home Affairs web site.  Dean Gregory's office will obtain written confirmation of the externship placement from the host sites and provide this documentation to students. Students will not be issued a temporary residence permit without this documentation.

Students are also expected to check the US Department of State's website for information regarding travel alerts or warnings for travel to South Africa.
