International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development

The International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) is an independent non-profit organization based in Geneva. By empowering stakeholders in trade policy through information, networking, dialogue, well-targeted research, and capacity building, the Centre aims to influence the international trade system such that it advances the goal of sustainable development.

Nature of the Extern's Work and Supervision
The goals of this placement are both to provide students with valuable work experience and contacts in the international trade and sustainable development field, enabling them to acquire a better understanding of the interlinkages between trade and sustainable development, and to assist ICTSD achieve its mission to empower key stakeholders in trade policy to influence the international trade system such that it advances the goal of sustainable development.

Important Information for Students
ICTSD will consider taking one or more students.  There are no formal prerequisites or language requirements.

The candidate for this position should possess the following abilities:

  • Excellent research, writing, and organizational skills.
  • Understanding of international economic law/international trade law, public international law, and more specifically familiarity with the WTO dispute settlement system.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment.
  • Excellent computer skills (especially in Word and Excel).

English is the overwhelmingly predominant working language of the organization; it issues publications in Spanish and French as well, and in some cases German.
