Online Priority Registration (PRS)

The instructions for using the Priority Registration System (PRS) follow. We strongly encourage you to read these instructions at least once to familiarize yourself with how the online registration system works. To skip the instructions and go straight to the login use the link below.

Priority Registration System Login

General

These are general notes about using any page of the Priority Registration System (PRS).

Browser Setup

In order to login to the Priority Registration System and use all of the screens you must have both "cookies" and "javascript" enabled.

In Internet Explorer these options are listed under the "Tools" - "Internet Options" menu pick. Then go to the "Security" tab, and look under "Custom Level".

In Netscape Navigator use the "Edit" - "Preferences..." menu pick, and look under "Advanced".

Page Size

The Priority Registration System was designed to look best at an 800x600 screen resolution. You should be able to see everything on most pages if you have your screen set to this resolution. A few of the pages may end up slightly larger than the screen size, however, most notably the "First Round Requests" and the "Second Round Requests" pages. Watch for horizontal or vertical scroll bars on the edges of your browser window to indicate that the page is too large to fit. Use the scroll bars to make sure you have seen the whole page. Note that you will see these scroll bars on many more pages if your screen size is smaller than 800x600.

Navigation Bar

At the top of almost all pages in the Priority Registration System (PRS) you will find a navigation bar. This is a set of utility links, all of which will open in a separate browser window. The links include

Law School Home

Opens the Law School's home web site page.

<term> Schedule

One or more of these will be in the navigation bar. Each opens the course schedule page for the indicated term.

Course Descr.

This link opens a page containing the official descriptions for all of the law school courses.

When you are ready to proceed to the main menu, click on the "Next" button

Main Menu

The main menu will show all possible choices for requesting courses, organized by term. Some links will include a range of dates. These links will only be active during the indicated dates. You may see any of the following choices:

Round One Registration

This choice allows you to select seminars, practice/simulation courses, and clinics, for the indicated term during round one.

Round Two Registration

This choice allows you to select any type of course for which you are eligible for the term indicated (based on your official expected graduation date) during round two.

Research, External Studies, Advanced Clinic

This page includes instructions for how to sign up for the various types of independent study courses.

Drop Round One Courses

This link is active during round two registration for the indicated term. It allows the student to drop classes assigned during round one.
Be careful when committing changes from this page...changes are permanent!

This link allows you to preview and print reports of various formats.

Non-law Course Registration

Follow the instructions to take a course outside the Law School.

LOGOUT

This link logs you off the Priority Registration System (PRS).

Note, if you do not log off the system, then anyone can sit down at the workstation and change your class requests!

Round One Requests

This page allows you to make requests for round one registration. It has several areas of interest.

Current Schedule

If you have assigned courses, they will appear in a section near the top labeled "Current Schedule." This list will include the course number and title, and the days/times it meets, for each course. If you have not been assigned courses, this section will not be shown.

Save/Cancel

Note, if you do not press the "Save" button, your requests (or request changes) will not be saved!

The "Save" and "Cancel" buttons refer to the Request Selection section below. If you click "Save", the requests selected will be saved to the Priority Registration System (PRS) database, and you will be taken to the Confirmation page. If you click "Cancel" nothing will be saved (and any previous requests will remain in the database), and you will be taken back to the "Main Menu" page.

Request Selection

All of the courses you can request are listed in a column of dropdown boxes. Each entry in the box indicates the course number and section, followed by the number of credits the course is worth, and finally the course name. The lists are sorted first by course type (clinic, seminar, ...) and then alphabetically.

Note that some of the clinics are comprised of a pair of classes each, such as, Child Advocacy Clinic and Clinical Law I. On the Priority Registration System (PRS), you only need request the first class from the pair. The Priority Registration System (PRS) will automatically enroll you in the second class from the pair if your request is granted. The Priority Registration System (PRS) Report displays the meeting times and the credit sum of both classes in a pair.

To choose requests use the following procedure:

  • Indicate a request by clicking on the down arrow on the right side of a box and selecting a course from the pop up list.
  • In the top most box place the request with the highest priority, be it a seminar, clinic or practice simulation.
  • In the next box down, place your request with the second highest priority.
  • Continue in this manner until you run out of requests or boxes to put them in (you are allowed seven (7) requests total for round one registration).
  • You can see the number of priorities you have remaining to the right of the request. If you have any priorities left, then you will see a column of "Use Priority" checkboxes next to the request pull downs.
  • To use one of your priorities to give yourself a higher chance of getting a course, check the "Use Priority" box next to the request. Note that priorities must be used in order of request preference. For example, you cannot add a priority to your second request unless you have also indicated a priority usage for your first request. Description of priorities.
  • Assignment is limited to one seminar and one clinic or practice/simulation course during round one.

Round Two Requests

The Round Two Request page is very similar to the Round One Request page. The differences are explained in the section below.

Current Schedule

Any current schedule shown here will include classes assigned to you from round one registration.

Save/Cancel

Note, if you do not press the "Save" button, your requests (or request changes) will not be saved!

These buttons work identical to the Round One Requests page, except they refer to round two requests.

Request Selection

There are several changes to note for this section.

  • The note indicating how many priorities you have left has moved to the top of the page, above the current schedule, in order to make room for the "Alternate" columns.
  • Each request now has two possible alternate requests. You will not get both a primary request and an alternate from the same row (think of them as a request "group", from which you will get, at most, one class). Thus you will be granted, at most, seven (7) classes (one from each row) during round two registration, subject to credit limits, overlapping schedules, etc.

Specifically, alternate requests work as follows:

  • We first try to place you in to your "Primary request" course. If you get into this course, we skip the rest of the row (the alternates).
  • If you cannot get into your primary choice, then we try to place you into your first alternate. If you get into your first alternate, we ignore the second alternate.
  • If you cannot get into your first alternate choice we try your second alternate. It IS possible that you will not get any of your requests for a given row.
  • You should pay attention to when your alternate choices meet. Since the assignment engine will not grant you overlapping classes, it is possible for an alternate choice to prevent you from getting a subsequence Primary request.
  • You do not have to request alternates.
  • As with the round one requests, you should place your highest priority class into the top most row. Make it your "Primary" choice. If you have any possible alternates to this class, request them as alternates on this top most row.
  • Summer starters who are in their third trimester will see that their top most row is labeled "Foundation" instead of "1st Choice". The dropdown lists will show only Foundation courses. You should indicate a request for a Foundation course here, as the engine will give you a higher priority to get into this class. Note that this is independent of any priorities you have remaining. You cannot use a priority for this class. You can list alternates for your Foundation course, just as you can for any other, and they work the same way.
  • Priority boxes work the same way as they do on the Round One Requests page, with the added restriction that you must use a priority for a primary request before you can use one for an alternate on the same row. Likewise, you must check the priority box for the first alternate before you can check it for the second. Description of priorities.
  • The class list pull-downs for Round Two Registration will show all class types, including the ones that were listed for Round One Registration. Some of these classes may already be full (from the round one assignments). These classes will be marked with an asterisk (*). You can still request these courses, but you will be added to the end of the wait list (and may be placed into any alternate you list on the same line).

Research, External Studies

This page includes instructions for how to sign up for the various types of independent study courses.

Drop Round One Courses

Be careful when committing changes from this page...changes are permanent!

This page is used to drop courses assigned during Round One Registration. All classes assigned during round one registration will be listed. To drop one or more classes just click on the checkbox next to the class and then click the "Save" button. You will be asked to confirm your drop. If you do not confirm the drop you will be returned to this page. If you confirm the drop, then the course assignments will be permanently removed from the Priority Registration System (PRS) database. Either confirming a drop or hitting the "Cancel" button will take you back to the "Main Menu".

Reports

The Reports page shows you your Priority Registration Report on screen and allows you print it. The following data is included on the report:

Assigned Classes

All assigned classes. Each assigned class has the following information listed:

  • Course number and title.
  • Course credits.
  • Was a priority spent?
  • Days the course meets.
  • Times the course meets on each day.
  • Professor(s) responsible for each day and time.

Status of Previous Requests

All requests considered for assignment with the decisions. This list will not include courses to which you are currently assigned (check "Assigned Classes" to get that list).

Current Requests

All current (unconsidered) requests. Each request has the following information listed:
  • Course number and title.
  • Course credits.
  • Was a priority requested?
  • Days the course meets.
  • Times the course meets on each day.
  • Professor(s) responsible for each day and time.

For your convenience the "Print" and "Cancel" buttons are available from both the top and bottom of the report. Both sets of buttons do the same thing. Clicking the "Print" button will open your browser's print dialog, from which you can choose a printer to which to print. After you have finished printing, you will be returned to the "Main Menu". Clicking the "Cancel" button will return you to the Main Menu page without printing.
