This course explores the legal issues of the Fourth Estate. These include certain torts (defamation, privacy, infliction of emotional distress), press coverage of criminal and civil trials, access to governmental information, the reporter's privilege, decency regulation, and the broadcasting of political speech. If there is time, the course will touch briefly on broadcast regulation, cable and new technologies, and Internet law. A course in the First Amendment is helpful background but not necessary.
