Land Use Planning and Control

This course will introduce students to the legal and planning concepts that form our system of land use control and regulation. We will explore the principal methods by which local governments control owners? use of their land, with a special emphasis on zoning, planning, eminent domain, constitutional issues and the evolving theories about the conflict between property ownership and social responsibility. Through the use of in-class exercises, students will gain a deeper appreciation of the legal issues confronting land owners, developers, municipalities, special interest groups and other participants in the land use arena.
