Wireless Network Access

The Law School is 100% wireless network capable and has one of the busiest wireless networks on compus. Our wireless computing environment is designed to provide network connectivity throughout the Law School without being bound to an Ethernet port. U-M law students, faculty, and staff who have laptops and compatible wireless cards can have a ubiquitous, high-speed wireless internet connection to our network environment and printers from anywhere in the School and Law Library.

Obtaining a Wireless Card
To use the Law School's wireless network, your laptop will require a configured IEEE 802.11 a/b/g-compliant wireless card. Most 802.11 a/b/g cards work in the Law School wireless network environment. 802.11 b-only cards will soon not work at the Law School and should not be purchased. The 802.11 b protocol is being phased out in favor of the faster 802.11 a and g protocols.

Interested law students have several options for obtaining a wireless card:

  • Include an integrated wireless card option in your laptop purchase order (recommended)
  • Purchase a wireless card from area stores such as Best Buy
  • Purchase a wireless card online from Web sites such as PC Connection
Installing and Configuring your Wireless Card
Wireless setup instructions for XP, Vista, and Mac are provided to assist with configuration of your laptop for the Law School wireless network environment.

Note: Currently, due to the size and restrictions of the Law School's wireless network, wireless access is granted to Law School Affiliates only.

Wireless Access in the Classrooms
The Law School no longer controls wireless access during class time.

Go wireless at the Business School!
Due to a special arrangement with the Business School, Law School students with compatible wireless cards can use the wireless LAN installed at the Business School. Before you can access the Business School's wireless network, you must configure your wireless card for the Business School. If you have any problems accessing their wireless network, please contact Business School Laptop Support.
