Audio-Visual Equipment & Services

To request A/V services from the list below, please complete the Event Reservations online form (login required)Detailed instructions are available on our FAQ page.

Audio Duplication
We recommend audio be digitized. Please specify the source media to be copied from, and your media preference for the copy to be made in the 'comments' field of the work request form. The A/V Staff are happy to provide duplicating services for a limited number of copies while working within copyright restrictions. High-volume duplication projects may need to be outsourced.

Audio Playback
We can provide a CD/tape player for playback of audio from compact disc, analog cassette tape or radio broadcast. In the larger classrooms we can patch the audio output into the room PA. Other options for audio playback may be possible upon consultation with our A/V Staff. If the audio will be output from a laptop, please select the 'laptop audio output' option instead.

Audio Recording
Audio recordings will be made in digital format by default, using compact audio recorders to provide high quality and to facilitate requests for audio streamed from the world wide web.

The requestor must obtain from all speakers their permission to be recorded, and for that recording to be made available via the world wide web, in advance of the event. Receipt of this permission must be affirmed on the A/V work request form in the 'comments' field.

Camera for still photos
A digital still camera is available for capturing photos, typically stored as .JPG files after downloading to a computer.

Convert 35mm slides to digital format
We recommend that 35mm slides be converted to digital format, and provide this service.

Document Camera
Also known as a visualizer or tabletop camera, a document camera sends the image from a printed sheet of paper or other object to a data projector. The document camera can also read transparencies and is, in essence, the modern overhead projector. Please always request a data projector when selecting the document camera.

Easel/Pens for Dry Erase Board or Paper Pad
This set of equipment provides a way to present classroom/meeting notes. Please specify your choice of either a dry-erase board or large paper pad in the 'comments' field of the A/V work request form. A/V Staff will provide two pens. An eraser will also be provided if a dry erase board is requested.

Internet Connectivity
Be sure to select this option if your event will utilize an Internet connection. Please note that not all classrooms have wired ethernet access. However, all Law School classrooms have wireless access and all A/V laptops are setup for wireless Internet. Be advised that neither wired nor wireless Internet access is available in the Lawyers Club Faculty Dining Room or the Lawyers Club Lounge.

Laptop
Please consider requesting an A/V laptop for your computer-based presentation needs to avoid delays caused by hardware incompatibilities. We recommend e-mailing your presentation and/or files to lawav@umich.edu in advance so they can be loaded on the laptop before your event. Have a backup copy with you, preferably on a USB drive or CD. You will need to also reserve a data projector to display your presentation. PowerPoint users may wish to add a 'PowerPoint remote' from the equipment list as well. If your event requires Internet access or laptop audio to be output to speakers or the PA, be sure to select those items from the equipment list on the work request form.

Laptop audio output to speakers/PA
If you have audio as part of your laptop presentation please select 'laptop audio output' from the equipment list in addition to other selections.

Laser Pointer
A laser pointer is a pen-like instrument that can be used to highlight items on the screen during a presentation. Note: Our PowerPoint remotes have a built-in laser pointer.

Microphone
To amplify a speaker's voice, please reserve this option. Rooms with a built-in PA system are: Hutchins 100, 120, 138, 150, 220, 250. Amplification is generally not required for other rooms, but a portable PA system is available and can be selected from the equipment list for unequipped rooms. You should specify the quantity of microphones needed and the style (handheld, lavaliere or Countryman; wired or wireless) in the 'comments' field of the work request form. Rooms equipped with wireless PA systems are Hutchins 100, 138, 220, and 250.

Handheld Microphone: available in wired or wireless form. Microphone stands are also available for use with handheld microphones in either a tabletop style or tall, free-standing style, the latter with or without boom arms, which extend the stand's reach for more convenient positioning.

Lavaliere Microphone: primarily used in wireless form. A lavaliere microphone is a small microphone featuring a clip for fastening near the neck, with a wire that connects to a wireless belt-pack transmitter.

Countryman Microphone: This is a tiny microphone at the end of a tube, secured by a flexible piece that fits over the ear, and having a wire that connects to a wireless belt-pack transmitter.

Mouse
A mouse is available for people who prefer the control it offers over a laptop's touchpad when showing presentations. A mouse can be especially useful for web-based presentations.

Other Equipment/Services
If the desired equipment or service does not appear in the equipment list on the request form, please enter a detailed description of the item or service you need in the other equipment/services box of the form. We will try to find a way to accommodate your request to the best of our abilities.

Portable PA System
The portable PA system features a microphone and podium for use in classrooms not equipped with a built-in PA system. The rooms with built-in PA systems are Hutchins 100, 120, 138, 150, 220, and 250. Most other rooms do not require amplification under normal circumstances, but the portable PA is available for those situations when extra amplification is desired.

Portable Projection Screen
The portable projection screen is used in classrooms or other spaces not equipped with built-in screens. Rooms without screens are Hutchins 118, 232 (the courtroom), 234 (the jury room), 242, 350 (the Faculty Lounge), Legal Research 903, and the Lawyers Club Faculty Dining Room, Lounge, Recreation Room, and N Section Cook Room.

PowerPoint Remote
The PowerPoint remote control allows presenters greater freedom to roam during their presentation. The remote controls slide navigation forward and backward, allows the presenter to blank the screen, and features a built-in laser pointer.

Projector for 35mm slides
A projector for presenting 35mm photographic slides is available. Request a portable projection screen if the space to be used is not equipped with a built-in screen.

Projector for Data or Video
A data/video projector can display video from a variety of sources. At the Law School data/video projectors are mainly used for PowerPoint or web-based presentations and for showing movies or video clips. Commonly used sources include a document camera, DVD player, VCR, or laptop. Be sure to select either the 'laptop' or 'video playback' options in tandem with your request for a data/video projector if you need the Law School to supply additional playback equipment.

Note: If the space for your event is not large, please consider requesting a TV Monitor instead of a projector. We have a number of large TV monitors & DVD/VCR combo units already assembled for showing video in small to medium-sized classrooms.

Projector for transparencies
Also referred to as an 'overhead projector', this presentation device projects transparencies.

Streaming Audio
Digital audio can be streamed 24/7 from an archived source via a link on a web page or live as an audio webcast. Common file formats such as Real Media and Windows Media Audio are supported. Advance notice is required to set up a live webcast. Requestors of this delivery method - including internal Law School departments - will incur charges and need to make payment arrangements using a shortcode prior to the event. Contact lawav@umich.edu for the current fee schedule.

Note: "audio recording" and "streaming audio" are considered separate processes. Be sure to select both from the equipment list on the work request form if applicable.

Teleconference
Most offices can accommodate our teleconferencing equipment. You may also request the following rooms in Hutchins Hall:  the B38 Conference Room;  classrooms 116, 138, 236 and 424; and 234 Hutchins Hall (the Jury Room).  903 Legal Research (the Cook Room) may also be requested for teleconferencing.  Charges for long distance or international calls made from these rooms that are not associated with a Law School class will be recharged to the requesting department.

TV Monitor
TV monitors are available in 20-inch and 27-inch sizes. We have units pre-assembled with DVD/VCR combo units for showing movies and film-clips. There is also the capability of showing broadcasts from the UMTV system.

Video Conference
The Law School has three videoconference rooms (116 Hutchins, 220 Hutchins, and 234 Hutchins) that support both ISDN and IP videoconferencing. For IP videoconferencing, any of the classrooms with a 100BT Wired Ethernet port will work in conjunction with our videoconference carts. Technical staff for the far side of the videoconference should complete and email the videoconference form letter to lawav@umich.edu.

Video Duplication
We recommend video be digitized. Please specify the source media to be copied from, and your media preference for the copy to be made in the 'comments' field of the work request form. The A/V Staff are happy to provide duplicating services for a limited number of copies while working within copyright restrictions. High-volume duplication projects may need to be outsourced. As an alternative to this, we recommend that you consider making a request for streaming video via the web from an archived source or making the video available for download.

Video Playback
We support a variety of video playback options, including DVD, VHS tape and mini-DVD tape. Be sure to also request a 'TV Monitor' or 'Video Projection' from the list on the work request form to assist us in supplying the desired equipment.

If the video will be output from a laptop, you should supply the file or web address containing the video in advance so that it can be tested with our equipment for compatibility. Be sure to select the 'laptop audio output' if the video has an audio component.

Video Production Project
A complete video production project includes shooting the video footage, editing the video, and making a DVD master with DVD track navigation. A/V staff can digitize video footage for editing and mastering. Another type of video production project would be capturing computer video in tandem with an audio track using software such as Adobe Captivate. A typical scenario for this use would be the creation of computer-based training videos and virtual tours.

Video Recording
Video recordings can be made in a variety of formats though it should be noted that the length of the event may play a role in determining format availability. We recommend digital formats if there is the possibility that the video will need to be streamed from the world wide web. Please specify your media preference for the recording in the 'comments' field of the work request form.

The requestor must obtain from all speakers their permission to be recorded, and for that recording to be made available via the world wide web, in advance of the event. Receipt of this permission must be affirmed on the A/V work request form in the 'comments' field.
