Audio-Visual Services Overview

Audio-Visual Facilities, Services and Equipment
The Law School provides A/V services, equipment, and personnel to set up and break down equipment for officially sponsored Michigan Law School events. Officially sponsored Michigan Law School events will be given first priority. Limited, for fee services will be provided to other University departments, non-law students, and external organizations during normal A/V working hours (8:00 am - 9:00 pm, Monday though Friday).

Law faculty, staff and students may request off-site use of equipment for Law School-related events only. Equipment will not be loaned for personal use.

Requests by non-Law School entities for events outside normal working hours will be accepted only for simple self-service items such as a microphone or TV/VCR combination, when suitable arrangements can be made for pickup & retrieval of the equipment from a designated location.

The Law School Audio-Visual Department does not loan or rent equipment to be used off-site by non-Law School entities.

Give Proper Notice When Making Requests
All requests for A/V services and equipment, no matter how simple, must be placed through the Law Events online system. Advance notice is extremely important, especially if it requires staff to work overtime and weekends. Give as much notice as possible for major events (at least a month for symposia, one week but preferably more for video conferences). Even simple requests must be made at least two working days in advance to ensure availability of equipment and support staff. A list of all symposia speakers contact information must be sent to lawav@umich.edu at least two weeks prior to a symposium so that each speaker's A/V needs during the symposium can be determined in advance.

Submitting Work Requests
To request A/V services, please complete the Event Reservations online form (login required).   Detailed instructions are available on our FAQ page.

Permissions From Speakers For Recording Prior To Events
Formal permission must be obtained prior to an event from any person who will be recorded during the course of the event.

Recording Of Classes
Digital audio recording with audio files posted to CTools will only be performed at the request of the faculty member or his/her designated representative.  Classes are not recorded for individual students.  An individual student who is going to miss several classes (i.e. more than a week) due to an illness or other emergent personal situation should first obtain the Professor's permission for the class to be recorded.  Once permission is obtained, ask a friend with recording capabilities on their laptop to record the class.   If that isn't feasible, the student should try to get written class notes from a friend.

Videoconferences
Rooms 116, 220, or 234 of Hutchins Hall may be reserved for videoconferences. Please e-mail lawav@umich.edu with contact information for the technical staff supporting the other side of the videoconference at least seven days prior to the event so that arrangements can be made to test the connection between the sites.

Charges associated with ISDN videoconference calls initiated by the Law School for the purpose of conducting Law School classes will be absorbed by the Audio-Visual Department as part of their operating costs. Charges associated with ISDN videoconferences for symposia or other events may need to be recharged to the requesting department if they become excessive. If both sites have the ability to connect over IP using 100 BaseT lines, this will be our preferred method of connection.

External parties interviewing students via videoconference over ISDN are expected to initiate the call, as the Law School will not absorb any costs for these events. Students requesting videoconference interviews should refer to the Video Conference Interview Procedures for Law Students section of our FAQ page.

Teleconferences
Most offices can accommodate our teleconferencing equipment. You may also request the following rooms in Hutchins Hall:  the B38 Conference Room;  classrooms 116, 138, 236 and 424; and 234 (the Jury Room).  903 Legal Research (the Cook Room) may also be requested for teleconferencing.  Charges for long distance or international calls made from these rooms that are not associated with a Law School class will be recharged to the requesting department.
