Miscellaneous Private Loan Programs - Supplemental Sources of Financial Aid

Alaska Student Loan Program Student Financial Aid Office
Applicants must have been residents of Alaska for two years immediately prior to filing. Loans of up to $6,500/year are available to full-time students at an 8% interest rate. Loans must be paid off over a 10-year period, however if the student remains an AK resident for six years, 50% of the loan will be forgiven.

Michael Murphy Scholarship Fund
Scholarship loans of up to $1,000/year are awarded to needy Alaska residents pursuing a degree in law, law enforcement or a closely related field. Recipients who graduate from a degree program receive forgiveness for 20% of the loan for each year they are employed full time in Alaska in law or in law enforcement related fields.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and a member of the American Baptist Church for at least one year prior to applying for assistance. Full-time graduate students may borrow $1,000 annually ($3,000 over three years). Part- time students are eligible for one-half these amount. No interest is charged until graduation, then 7% is charged for the first three years and 8% for the last three years.

Residents of ND are eligible to apply for loans of an approximate amount of $6,000 at a five percent interest rate. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.50 to maintain their eligibility.

Residents of Baltimore City or County, Anne Arundel County, Carroll County, Harford County and Howard County may apply for up to $3,500 for undergraduates and $5,000 for graduates in interest-free loans that can be renewed yearly. The loans are available to students who have exhausted all other sources of aid and still find themselves short. A minimum GPA of 3.00 must be maintained while the student is in school.

Residents of Mississippi are eligible to apply for $5,000 (maximum) loans at six percent interest. Applicants must show evidence of need and promise of social and financial responsibility. Payments start no later than three months after graduation and are due once a year.

Candidates must be residents of New York City, or Nassau, Suffolk, or Westchester counties to be eligible for an unlimited number of loans of up to $7,500. Repayment begins one month after the date of the loan and is due in 30 equal payments. Students may apply year-round. Personal guarantors are needed.

Students may apply for interest-free loans through the Sarah and Harold Gottlieb Jewish Educational Loan Service (JELS). Applicants for these interest-free loans must be Jewish residents of the Metropolitan Detroit area and full-time students, pursuing undergraduate, graduate or professional education at an accredited college or university in Michigan. Financial need and satisfactory academic progress must be shown.

Graduate students who are members of the Knights of Columbus or are dependents of members (can be deceased) are eligible to apply for loans of up to $8,500 per academic year. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or resident aliens who are attending an accredited school at least half- time. Evidence of financial need is required.
Deadline: April 1 for fall term and November 1 for winter term.

Approximately twelve $500 to $5,000 interest-free loans are made to Jewish students unable to obtain a higher education without assistance. Successful applicants assume a moral obligation to repay the loan within ten years.

Graduate students may receive a loan with no interest accruing while the student is enrolled full-time in a degree program. The student must be a member of the Presbyterian Church (USA), a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, enrolled full-time at an accredited institution, in good academic standing and in need of financial assistance. Graduate loan caps will be determined at the time of application and the current interest rate is available upon request.

Interest-free loans of up to $5,000 per year are awarded on a competitive basis, taking into account motivation, need and self-reliance as well as scholastic record. Only students who are entering their FINAL year of study in a baccalaureate or graduate degree program are eligible. Application forms are sent between January 1st and March 31st. Repayment is based on monthly income after graduation.
