Docket Information
The Docket is the Law School's official means of
communicating important administrative announcements
and many Law School events to the student body. The
Docket is published weekly [bi-weekly June-August]
only in electronic form and the complete contents
are contained in this site. Students are responsible
for all information in each issue. In addition,
please check both your e-mail accounts and pendaflex
mail folders daily for important faculty and
administrative communications disseminated after the
week's Docket has been published.
Unless you request otherwise, announcements will
appear in one issue only.

Limited Grade Option (Elective Pass/Fail)
Law students make their limited grade option
(pass/fail) elections for law courses ONLINE at the
Law School Registrar's Office Web site. Do NOT use
Wolverine Access to elect pass/fail! Wolverine
Access does NOT correctly reflect pass/fail
elections for law students. Please go to:

Click on "Pass/Fail" then
"Pass/Fail Login" You will be presented with a
login page where you will use your uniqname and
password [log in] Click on "Pass/Fail" On the
left side you will see the Pass/Fail column where
you will click on the Graded or limited grade option
(Pass/Fail) link to change the election for that
class. The link will say “past deadline” if it is
after the listed pass/fail deadline.
***You
can change your limited grade option (pass/fail)
election online anytime until the established
deadline passes.***
A student may exercise
the limited grade option for up to fifteen (15)
credits of course work in upper-class courses and
seminars. You may not exercise the limited grade
option more than two times during your final
semester.

pass/fail limitations for DEGREE HONORS (you may not
have more than 20 credits of combined ELECTIVE and
MANDATORY pass/fail credits to qualify for degree

Attention First-Year Students: You are required
to take ALL of your courses, including your
first-year elective course, on a graded basis.
Therefore, you may NOT elect the limited grade
option (pass/fail) in your first-year elective
course. If you do, you will receive no higher than a
"C" in the course.
Summer Starters in their
THIRD term may elect pass/fail in upper-class
courses.
Transfer Students: You may elect
a first-year course on a limited grade option
(pass/fail) basis. You MUST file a Limited Grade
Option Form in the Law School Registrar's Office,
300 HH, BEFORE the final exam becomes generally
available.
LL.M Students: You are required to take ALL of
your courses on a graded basis. Therefore, you may
NOT elect the limited grade option.
Accelerated/Postponed Pass/Fail Election Deadlines:
For courses with an EXAM, the pass/fail deadline is
normally just before the start of an in-class exam
or the first day when a take-home exam becomes
generally available. Courses with deadlines EARLIER
or LATER than this (and seminars with early
deadlines are on the list of "Fall 2007 Accelerated
or Postponed Limited Grade Option (Pass/Fail)
Deadlines," which is posted at the front desk in the
Law School Registrar's Office, 300 HH, and on the
first-floor bulletin board across from the elevator.
Research Course:
Unless an accelerated pass/fail deadline has been
established, a student can elect to take a research
course on a limited grade option (pass/fail) basis
up to the time you turn-in the paper on the
appointed due date. A student who elects the limited
grade option (pass/fail) basis AFTER December 21,

Seminar/Course (No Exam / Paper
Option):

appointed due date. A student who elects the limited

(Pass/Fail) Form in the Law School Registrar's
Office, 300 HH, because the online system will not
be available.
Early Ending Seminars/Courses (No
Exam):
If the seminar/course (no exam) ENDS EARLY and no
deadline/time has been established, you can choose
pass/fail online until the last day of class @ 5:00
p.m. After that date/time, you will have to file a
Limited Grade Option (Pass/Fail) Form in the Law
School Registrar's Office, 300 HH, PRIOR to
turning-in your paper or project on the appointed
due date.
Non-Law Course:
A student MUST have course approval (course approval
requests are placed ONLINE using the External
Enrollment link on the Law School Registrar's Office
Web site). Those who receive a grade of at least a
"B-" and want the "S" vs. the letter grade to show
on the transcript MUST file a Limited Grade Option
(Pass/Fail) Form in the Law School Registrar's
Office, 300 HH, by the beginning of the exam period
of the department, school or college offering the
course. The online limited grade option (pass/fail)
is NOT available for non-law courses.

International Law Workshop introduces today’s most
debated issues in international and comparative law.
The Workshop is intended for non-specialists; you
are encouraged to attend any or all of the sessions.
Speakers will talk for 25 minutes, followed by
discussion and questions. The Workshop is
coordinated by Professors Daniel Halberstam, Michael
Barr, and Nico Howson, and Assistant Dean for

interested in pursuing an internship or other
project overseas after you have completed two years
of law school or shortly after graduation? Do you
need funding to make your dream a reality? The Law
School has an endowment for assisting recent law
school graduates, or law students who have had two
or more years of law study, to travel abroad for
work or study experience. If you are interested in
learning more about the Bates Overseas Fellowships,
please attend this information meeting. Virginia
Gordan, Assistant Dean for International Affairs,
Center for International and Comparative Law, will
be there to discuss this opportunity and answer your
questions. The deadline for submitting proposals for
projects to take place between January 2008 and
January 2009 is November 1, 2007. In the past,
students have used the fellowships for internships
with international agencies, human rights
organizations, and law offices in foreign countries;
or comparative legal study and teaching
assistantships at universities throughout the world;
or pursuit of a research project for which field
research overseas is an important component.
(Students may not seek Bates Overseas Fellowships
for externships or study abroad programs for

opportunity to see how the concepts, rules
and case law studied in the classroom apply
in actual cases. These programs also promise
to be interesting to all members of the Law
School community. The next talk in the
series will be given by Asst. Professor
Kimberly Thomas of the Michigan Clinical Law
Program, who will present "Anatomy of a
Criminal Case". Feel free to bring your

Olin Center Student Fellowships The John M. Olin Center
for Law and Economics is offering students fellowships for $2,500 for academic
year 2007-08. For more information, go to

J.L. Turner Legal Association Minority Law Student Scholarships
Several scholarships of at least $1,000 will be awarded. There are two types of J.L. Turner Legal Association Minority Law Student Scholarships: merit and financial need. In selecting financial need scholarship winners, they will consider an applicant's need, disadvantaged circumstances, community involvement and other factors. Merit scholarships will be awarded primarily on academic standing. To be eligible an applicant must be a United States citizen, have a connection to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, be enrolled at an accredited law school and be in good academic standing. Microsoft Student Fellowships (Olin Center) The Program
in Law, Economics and Technology at the UM Law School (Olin Center) is offering
student fellowships for $3,000 for academic year 2007-08. For more

Women Lawyers Association of Mid-Michigan (WLAM)
This scholarship of up to $1,500 is available to any full or part time woman law student who is attending a Michigan law school; resides in Ingham, Eaton, or Clinton County; and has a 2.5 grade point average or better. The winner will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and their statement of career plans upon graduation. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office, 310 HH. Federal Bar Association for the Western District of Michigan
The Western District of Michigan awards annually $4,500 in scholarships to
law students who are either from the Western Federal Judicial District of
Michigan or have a connection to the practice of law in the Western District of
Michigan which suggests that they will become practitioners in this geographic
area upon their completion of their legal studies. Further application
information is available in the Financial Aid Office. The application deadline
is
September 30, 2007.
Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship This $5,000
scholarship is open to all students currently enrolled in an American Bar
Association accredited law school and pursuing a career in intellectual property
law. The applicant must be a member of a historically under represented group
(including race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability) and must
have exemplary writing and oral communication skills. Applications are available

Foley & Lardner Minority Scholarship The Foley & Lardner
Minority Scholarship Program provides eight scholarships each year to first year
minority law students. Minority students in their first year of law school at
the following schools are eligible for the Program: Boalt Hall, Duke, Florida,
Georgetown, Michigan, Northwestern, UCLA and Wisconsin. One scholarship will be
awarded at each school. First year law students include both summer starters and
fall starters. Each scholarship, in the amount of $5,000, will be paid at the
beginning of the student's second semester of law school. Applications are

complete an application and submit it to the Financial Aid Office by
October 1, 2007.
LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell Client Review Fellowship
One Fellow will be selected for this one-time gift of $15,000. The Fellowship is
open to all students who will enter their third/final year of law school in
Fall. The selection criteria include academic achievement, demonstrated
leadership potential, participation in community service, and commitment to
advancing diversity. Applications are available online at

Michigan Society of Fellows The Michigan Society of
Fellows invites applications from qualified candidates for three-year
postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Michigan. Candidates should be
near the beginning of their professional careers. Fellows are appointed as
Assistant Professors or Research Scientists in appropriate departments and as
Postdoctoral Scholars in the Michigan Society of Fellows. They are expected to
be in residence in Ann Arbor during the academic years of the fellowship, to
teach for the equivalent of one academic year, to participate in the informal
intellectual life of the Society, and to devote time to their independent
research or artistic projects. Seven Fellows will be selected for three-year
terms to begin September 1. Applications are available online,

October 1, 2007.
The University of Michigan UM/ULI Real Estate Forum
Scholarships totaling $10,000 will be awarded to five students. UM graduate students who study business, architecture, urban planning, public policy, law, natural resources, or engineering, who wish to be considered for one of the $2,000 scholarships must submit their resume along with a brief paper. Specific instructions for the paper are available in the Financial Aid Office, 310 HH. The application deadline is
October 5, 2007.
The Simon Karas Fellowship This Fellowship enables a recent law school graduate or former judicial law clerk to work on interesting and important appellate cases for the Attorney General. The Fellow selected will work in the Ohio Attorney General's Columbus office from September through August. The application should consist of a cover letter, resume, transcript, writing sample and two letters of recommendation, mailed directly by the writers of those letters. October 9, 2007.
Donald W. Banner Corporate Intern Scholarship Two
$10,000 scholarships will be awarded to outstanding law students who have
completed an internship in a corporate intellectual property law department and
intend to pursue a career in intellectual property law. Students must also be
enrolled in law school in 2008. Application information is available in the
Financial Aid Office, 310 HH. The application deadline is
October 12, 2007.
Hispanic Scholarship Fund The Hispanic Scholarship Fund
is offering two different scholarship opportunities for the 2007-2008 academic
year:
§ College Scholarship Program: Scholarships
range from $1,000 - $5,000. Students must be of Hispanic heritage, be a U.S.
citizen or a legal permanent resident of the United States, have a minimum grade
point average of 3.0, must apply for federal financial aid using the FAFSA, and
must be an undergraduate or a graduate student enrolled full-time in a
degree-seeking program at a U.S.- accredited institution in the U.S., Puerto
Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, or Guam.
§ Wal-Mart Scholarship Program: Scholarships
of $2,500 are available. Students must be of Hispanic heritage, be a U.S.
citizen or a legal permanent resident of the United States, have a minimum grade
point average of 3.0, and must be an undergraduate - Sophomore, Junior, Senior -
or a graduate student.

Robert Bosch Foundation
This nine-month fellowship program offers 20 U.S. professionals an in-depth understanding of the political, economic, and cultural environment of Germany and Europe. Bosch Fellows are competitively chosen from the fields of business administration, economics, international relations, journalism, law and public policy. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, ages 23-34 at the time of application, with 2+ years of relevant work experience and a graduate degree are recommended. No German language skills are required at the time of application. Applications are available online at

Internship With The AIRE Centre In London, United Kingdom

Ms. Nuala Mole, Founder & Director of the AIRE Centre (Advice on
Individual Rights in Europe) will be at the Law School Monday, October 22,
Tuesday, October 23, and Wednesday, October 24, to interview students interested
in being considered for not-for-credit summer 2008 internships or externships
for academic credit in summer 2008, fall 2008, or winter 2009. (If you wish to
pursue an externship for academic credit and you are selected by Ms. Mole, you
need to comply with the externship guidelines and requirements which may be
obtained from Trudy Feldkamp in 307 HH.) For information on how to apply for an
internship or externship with the AIRE Centre, please pick up the necessary
informational handout available outside of the Center for International &

New York State Unified Court System The New York State
Unified Court System will offer a one-year Legal Fellowship beginning in the
Fall of 2008 for recent law school graduates. This program is designed to
introduce recent law school graduates to careers in the public sector.
Assignments will be to judicial offices throughout the court system. The year
long salary will be $57,053. Brochures are available in the Financial Aid
Office, 310 HH. The application deadline is
November 2, 2007.
Jewish Vocational Service Students may apply for
interest-free loans through the Sarah and Harold Gottlieb Jewish Educational
Loan Service (JELS). Applicants for these interest-free loans must be Jewish
residents of the Metropolitan Detroit area and full-time students, pursuing
undergraduate, graduate or professional education at an accredited college or
university in Michigan. Financial need and satisfactory academic progress must
be shown. Handouts are available in the Financial Aid Office, 310 HH. The

Dykema Scholarship Dykema will select a minority
first-year law student at the University of Michigan to receive a $7,500
scholarship to be used for law school tuition and fees in the second year. This
scholarship is automatically renewable for the student's third year if the
student maintains a 3.0 GPA and presents proof of continued enrollment.
Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office starting mid-August.

German Chancellor Scholarship Program
Ten German Chancellor Scholarships are awarded annually to young professionals in the private, public, not-for-profit, cultural and academic sectors. The program is open to citizens of the United States, the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China. The program sponsors individuals who demonstrate the potential to strengthen ties between Germany and their own country through their profession or studies. The program begins September 1st and lasts twelve months. Monthly stipends range from 2,000 to 3,000 EUR. Candidates must possess a bachelor's degree and be under 35 years of age at the start of the award. Prior knowledge of German is not a prerequisite. Applications are available online at

LAW LIBRARY REORGANIZING ENTIRE
COLLECTION—25 MILES OF BOOKS
The
Library has begun a long planned project to
put the book collection in the Library of
Congress (LC) Classification scheme. When
we’re done, around the end of 2009 or early
2010, the collection will be much easier to
use: • Books will be arranged by subject.
• Books about law will be arranged by
jurisdiction, and within that by subject.
• The books patrons use the most will be in
the Smith Addition and the lesser used will
be in the Legal Research stacks. • The
Smith Addition will have space for us to
respond to patron needs, and house the
growth of the collection. • All active
journals will be in Smith, including
foreign, comparative, and international.
The process of rearranging about 700,000
books that take up about 25 miles of
shelving will be, well, messy at times.
We’ve already done a fair amount of shifting
in preparation, to shorten the time during
which large numbers of books will be moved
frequently. We’re committed to communicating
both our general plans, and the location of
specific volumes as they are moved, in many
ways.
Our goal is to maintain all
services at their present level, and provide
patrons with the information they need as we
always have.

football parking pass holders only. All vehicles must be removed by 10:00 p.m.
the preceding Friday evening as the lot is chained and locked closed. Please
note the popular student parking lot, SC9 located by the Coliseum on Hill and
Division, in included in the areas to vacate.
