Docket Information

The Docket is the Law School's official means of communicating important administrative announcements and many Law School events to the student body. The Docket is published weekly [bi-weekly June-August] only in electronic form and the complete contents are contained in this site. Students are responsible for all information in each issue. In addition, please check both your e-mail accounts and pendaflex mail folders daily for important faculty and administrative communications disseminated after the week's Docket has been published.

Unless you request otherwise, announcements will appear in one issue only.

Notices for the calendar (not the Docket) should be directed to lawcalendarsubmissions@umich.edu.

February 2008 Michigan Bar Applicants

Representatives from the State Bar of Michigan will visit the UM Law School on Wednesday, September 19th from 12:15-1:15 p.m. in room 132 HH to discuss the February 2008 bar exam applications.

Fall 2007 Registration And Drop/Add Calendar

Drop/Add uses the University's Wolverine Access System
Students can add their name to the bottom of a waitlist for open or closed seminars, practice/simulation courses, and clinics through Monday, September 3. Starting Tuesday, September 4, students will have to e-mail Amy Bishop (albishop@umich.edu) to have their name added to the bottom of a waitlist.

Waitlist Drop/Add begins Tuesday, September 4 at 8:00 a.m.
Starting Tuesday, September 4, permission codes will be entered each morning for seminars, practice/simulation courses, and clinics that meet that afternoon. Permission codes for Prof Pick (footnote #9) seminars, practice/simulation courses, and clinics will be entered as received. ALL Drop/Add activity ends Wednesday, September 12 at 5:00 p.m. As always, we will be available for questions during business hours in Room 300HH, or you can contact us by e-mail at lawrecords@umich.edu.

Brown Bag Lunch Series Highlights Actual Cases

The Office of Student Affairs sponsors a Brown Bag Lunch Series during which various members of the faculty and administration will make presentations about actual cases or issues in which they have been involved. First-year students will have the opportunity to see how the concepts, rules and case law studied in the classroom apply in actual cases. These programs also promise to be interesting to all members of the Law School community. The first talk in the series will be given by Professor Paul Reingold, Director of the Michigan Clinical Law Program, who will present a talk entitled "Anatomy of a Civil Case". Feel free to bring your lunch with you. (Note: students with meal contracts may request the Lawyers Club to prepare a bag lunch with one day's advance notice; you will not be able to bring a tray out of the dining hall to Hutchins Hall.

Family Law Project Informational Meeting

The Family Law Project is a non-profit, student-run organization that provides legal services to indigent survivors of domestic violence with family law matters such as divorce, custody, and personal protection orders. Attend our informational meeting led by the Family Law Project attorneys, Rebecca Shiemke, Laura Burstein, and Alyson Robbins, and learn how you can participate in the program and provide valuable assistance by working on a case. Pizza will be served.

Dual Degree Informational Meeting

Dual degree programs afford students with multiple interests the opportunity to complete two graduate programs in a shortened period of time. Want the chance to enhance your courtroom skills? Apply to represent Michigan at the National Child Welfare Law Moot Court Competition in March 2008. To learn more, come to the informational meeting. Applications can be picked up at this meeting. If you are unable to attend the meeting, applications can be picked up in the office of the Child Advocacy Law Clinic, 313 LR. Clinical Assistant Professor of Law Vivek Sankaran will be supervising this event. Betsey Wiegman (3L), who participated in the competition last year will help out as a coach and mentor.

Competitions/Scholarships/Externships/Fellowships

Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship
This $5,000 scholarship is open to all students currently enrolled in an American Bar Association accredited law school and pursuing a career in intellectual property law. The applicant must be a member of a historically under represented group (including race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability) and must have exemplary writing and oral communication skills. Applications are available online, www.bannerwitcoff.com/diversity.cfm. The application deadline is October 1, 2007.

LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell Client Review Fellowship
One Fellow will be selected for this one-time gift of $15,000. The Fellowship is open to all students who will enter their third/final year of law school in Fall. The selection criteria include academic achievement, demonstrated leadership potential, participation in community service, and commitment to advancing diversity. Applications are available online at www.mcca.com. The application deadline is October 1, 2007.

Michigan Society of Fellows
The Michigan Society of Fellows invites applications from qualified candidates for three-year postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Michigan. Candidates should be near the beginning of their professional careers. Fellows are appointed as Assistant Professors or Research Scientists in appropriate departments and as Postdoctoral Scholars in the Michigan Society of Fellows. They are expected to be in residence in Ann Arbor during the academic years of the fellowship, to teach for the equivalent of one academic year, to participate in the informal intellectual life of the Society, and to devote time to their independent research or artistic projects. Seven Fellows will be selected for three-year terms to begin September 1. Applications are available online, www.rackham.umich.edu/Faculty/sof.html. The application deadline is October 1, 2007.

Donald W. Banner Corporate Intern Scholarship
Two $10,000 scholarships will be awarded to outstanding law students who have completed an internship in a corporate intellectual property law department and intend to pursue a career in intellectual property law. Students must also be enrolled in law school in 2008. Application information is available in the Financial Aid Office, 310 HH. The application deadline is October 12, 2007.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is offering two different scholarship opportunities for the 2007-2008 academic year:

§ College Scholarship Program: Scholarships range from $1,000 - $5,000. Students must be of Hispanic heritage, be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident of the United States, have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, must apply for federal financial aid using the FAFSA, and must be an undergraduate or a graduate student enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program at a U.S.- accredited institution in the U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, or Guam.

§ Wal-Mart Scholarship Program: Scholarships of $2,500 are available. Students must be of Hispanic heritage, be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident of the United States, have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, and must be an undergraduate - Sophomore, Junior, Senior - or a graduate student.

Apply on-line at www.hsf.net. The deadline is October 15, 2007.

Internship With The AIRE Centre In London, United Kingdom INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE! Application Deadline: Friday, October 12, 2007
Ms. Nuala Mole, Founder & Director of the AIRE Centre (Advice on Individual Rights in Europe) will be at the Law School Monday, October 22, Tuesday, October 23, and Wednesday, October 24, to interview students interested in being considered for not-for-credit summer 2008 internships or externships for academic credit in summer 2008, fall 2008, or winter 2009. (If you wish to pursue an externship for academic credit and you are selected by Ms. Mole, you need to comply with the externship guidelines and requirements which may be obtained from Trudy Feldkamp in 307 HH.) For information on how to apply for an internship or externship with the AIRE Centre, please pick up the necessary informational handout available outside of the Center for International &
Comparative Law 300D LR in the Reading Room.

Federal Bar Association for the Western District of Michigan
The Western District of Michigan awards annually $4,500 in scholarships to law students who are either from the Western Federal Judicial District of Michigan or have a connection to the practice of law in the Western District of Michigan which suggests that they will become practitioners in this geographic area upon their completion of their legal studies. Further application information is available in the Financial Aid Office. The application deadline is September 30, 2007.

New York State Unified Court System
The New York State Unified Court System will offer a one-year Legal Fellowship beginning in the Fall of 2008 for recent law school graduates. This program is designed to introduce recent law school graduates to careers in the public sector. Assignments will be to judicial offices throughout the court system. The year long salary will be $57,053. Brochures are available in the Financial Aid Office, 310 HH. The application deadline is November 2, 2007.

Jewish Vocational Service
Students may apply for interest-free loans through the Sarah and Harold Gottlieb Jewish Educational Loan Service (JELS). Applicants for these interest-free loans must be Jewish residents of the Metropolitan Detroit area and full-time students, pursuing undergraduate, graduate or professional education at an accredited college or university in Michigan. Financial need and satisfactory academic progress must be shown. Handouts are available in the Financial Aid Office, 310 HH. The application deadline is November 16, 2007.

Dykema Scholarship
Dykema will select a minority first-year law student at the University of Michigan to receive a $7,500 scholarship to be used for law school tuition and fees in the second year. This scholarship is automatically renewable for the student's third year if the student maintains a 3.0 GPA and presents proof of continued enrollment. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office starting mid-August. Applications must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office, 310 HH, by December 3, 2007.

On home-game football Saturdays, the following parking lots are reserved for football parking pass holders only. All vehicles must be removed by 10:00 p.m. the preceding Friday evening as the lot is chained and locked closed. Please note the popular student parking lot, SC9 located by the Coliseum on Hill and Division, in included in the areas to vacate.
