University Of Amsterdam Law School And HEI In Geneva
Study Abroad Opportunities
Application Deadline: Wednesday, March 28, 2007
The Center for International & Comparative Law is pleased to let students know that the University of Michigan Law School has developed two new study abroad opportunities: HEI in Geneva and University of Amsterdam Law School.
The Graduate Institute of International Studies (HEI) in Geneva is for up to two students each academic year pursuant to a new student exchange. This opportunity will begin in fall 2007. Students may go in either semester. The language of instruction is English and French. It is possible to take only courses offered in English, but the curricular offerings are more extensive if the Michigan student is sufficiently proficient in French to take courses offered in French.
University of Amsterdam Law School is for up to four students each academic year pursuant to a new student exchange. This opportunity will begin in fall 2007. Students may go in either semester, although the fall is preferable because other students are starting fresh at Amsterdam, the curriculum has more foundational courses, the fall academic calendar is generally more compatible with our own, and so on. The language of instruction is in English.
The application deadline for both opportunities is Wednesday,
March 28, 2007.
For details on the applications process, courses, etc. please contact Stephanie Wiederhold, Center for International & Comparative Law, at

Competitions/Scholarships/Externships/Fellowships
83rd Henry M. Campbell Moot Court Competition Finals
This year marks the 83rd year that students have competed in the Henry M. Campbell Moot Court Competition, one of the Law School’s oldest and most respected competitions. Students progress through several rounds, culminating with arguments before federal judges. The final arguments are always a highlight of the school year. Judges for the final round are: The Honorable Steven M. Colloton of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit; The Honorable Deanell R. Tacha, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit; and The Honorable Gerald B. Tjoflat of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
The issues involved in this year’s case, Dope v. Piper, are: 1. Can individual officers of a privately run penal institution be held liable for Eight Amendment violations under Bivens v. Six Unknown Named Agents, 403 U.S. 388 (1971)? 2. Assuming that a Bivens action is appropriate against the defendants at all, can they additionally be held liable under the Fifth Amendment for violation of the right to privacy in personal medical information?
Finalists are Jeremy Suhr and Robert Stockman for the Petitioner, and Caitlin Bair and Jessica Berry for the Respondent.
Come listen and learn as each finalist takes the “hot seat” before the distinguished panel of judges. A reception will follow.

The Office of Student Affairs is looking for 1L and 2L students to serve as Orientation Leaders (Summer, Fall and Transfer) and/or FYI Fellows for the 2007-2008 academic year. Orientation leaders guide first-year and transfer students through Orientation activities. If you can provide either or both of these services to new law students in the upcoming academic year, please contact Marilyn Genoa
marilyng@umich.edu or Mark
Gebhart mgebhart@umich.edu for an e-mail application. Completed applications are requested by
March 26. Your participation is greatly needed!
Assistance For Students Missing Classes Due To Religious Holidays
Event Contact: Marilyn Genoa, marilyng@umich.edu, 734.764.0516
It is the policy of the Law School to attempt to minimize the disruption experienced by students when classes meet on their religious holidays. We can arrange for audio recordings to be made of the large first-year classes, Law School resources permitting. Class recordings will be available on line. Students in small classes, seminars, or clinics should contact their professors and arrange to obtain notes through a trusted classmate or, if the professor permits, to have a friend record the class. If you expect to be absent due to observance of a religious holiday and are unable to make arrangements on your own to get notes from a classmate, please send an email to Marilyn Genoa at
marilyng@umich.edu with the details of your request. Requests for Good Friday and Passover should be submitted to Ms. Genoa no later than noon on
March 30.
LL.M. Orientation Leaders Needed For Fall 2007
Application Deadline: Monday, April 2, 2007
Each year about 40 foreign lawyers from approximately 25 different countries come to the University of Michigan Law school to participate in our one-year Master of Laws (LL.M.) graduate degree program. A new class will be arriving at the end of August, and we need help to warmly welcome them to the University of Michigan. We need current law students who are interested in being Student Orientation Leaders to introduce incoming LL.M. students to the social and academic life at the Law School.
Orientation begins Monday, August 27, and runs through Friday, August 31, 2007. (Leaders do not need to be present this entire time. To know essential participation times, please see the LL.M. orientation leader application that may be obtained from Stephanie Wiederhold in the Center for International & Comparative Law via e-mail at
wls@umich.edu.) There will be a mandatory training session on Monday, August 27, at 4:30 p.m. for all leaders. Being an LL.M. orientation leader is a great opportunity to meet an extraordinary group of international attorneys and help them with the adjustment to the University of Michigan.
If you are interested in being an LL.M. Student Orientation Leader for our incoming class of LL.M. students, please e-mail Stephanie Wiederhold at
wls@umich.edu to request an application.
Applications are due by Monday,
April 2, 2007.
