Air & Waste Management Association
The East Michigan Chapter, A&WMA, is pleased to announce up to four $1,500 scholarships to be awarded to students studying for a career in air pollution control, hazardous waste management or another environmental area. The scholarships must be used at a college or university located within the State of Michigan. Merit is of primary interest, but financial need, extracurricular activities and interests are also considered. Applications are available online at www.emawma.org. The application deadline is February 28, 2007.

ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund is intended to encourage racial and ethnic minority students to apply to law school and to provide financial assistance to the scholarship recipients. Twenty $5,000 awards will be made to entering first-year students and may be renewable for two additional years, resulting in financial assistance totaling $15,000 during each student's time in law school. Applications are available online at www.abanet.org/fje. The application deadline is March 1, 2007.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund and Ford Motor Company are accepting applications for the Hispanic Bar Association of Michigan Law Program. Eligible students may receive a scholarship award of up to $5,900. Applicants must be of Hispanic heritage, be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, must apply for federal financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and be enrolled full-time as a second or third year law student at one of the following U.S. accredited institutions: Michigan State University School of Law, Thomas M. Cooley Law School, University of Detroit Mercy Law School, University of Michigan Law School or Wayne State University Law School. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office, 310 HH. The application deadline is March 1, 2007.

The Point Foundation
The application process is open to all LGBT students nationwide regardless of level of education. The average scholarship award is approximately $12,500. Point Scholars are chosen for their demonstrated leadership, scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities, involvement in the LGBT community and financial need. Particular interest is paid to students who have lost the financial and social support of their families and/or communities as a result of revealing their sexual orientation or gender identity. Toledo Community Foundation
The Toledo Community Foundation is pleased to offer the Amir and Shaheda Khan Scholarship for Law. This scholarship is for individuals of the Islamic faith who are pursuing a Juris Doctor degree at Case Western Reserve University, Michigan State University, The Ohio State University, University of Dayton, University of Michigan or The University of Toledo. It is anticipated that one $1,000 scholarship will be awarded. Application materials are available in the Financial Aid Office, 310 HH. The application deadline is March 2, 2007.

Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund Scholarship Program for Law Students
The Puerto Rican Bar Association (PRBA) Scholarship Award is $2,000. All first and second year Latino students attending law school in the United States are eligible to apply. PRBA selects recipients based on financial need and academic promise. Students working toward their LL.M. are not eligible for this award. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office, 310 HH. The application deadline is March 3, 2007.

Rhode Island Bar Foundation
Two $10,000 scholarships will be awarded to full-time students who are Rhode Island residents entering their first year of law school in September 2007. Each scholarship award will be made on the basis of demonstrated financial need, superior academic performance, community and public service, and demonstrated contacts with and commitment to the State of Rhode Island. Application instructions are available in the Financial Aid Office, 310 HH. The application deadline is March 6, 2007.

National Federation of the Blind Scholarship Programs
Each year the National Federation of the Blind gives a broad array of scholarships to recognize achievement by blind scholars. All applicants for these scholarships must be (1) legally blind and (2) studying in a post-secondary institution in the U.S. All scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, service to the community, and financial need. Applications are available online at www.nfb.org. The application deadline is March 31, 2006.

The Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship
The Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship is a $3000 award presented annually to a deserving Berks County, Pennsylvania, resident who will be enrolled in his or her second year at an accredited Law School. Applications are available online at www.bccf.org. The application deadline is April 1, 2007.

Judge Philip J. Glennie Scholarship
One scholarship in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to a law student who attended and graduated from a high school located within the Michigan counties of Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency or Presque Isle. Financial need is not a requirement. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office, 310 HH. The application deadline is April 1, 2007.

The Dean Acheson Legal Stage Program At The Court Of Justice Of The European Communities. Deadline ­ Monday, April 2, 2007.
The Dean Acheson Legal Stage Program at the Court of Justice of the European Communities is offering stage opportunities to a limited number of students from select US law schools at the Court of Justice and the Court of First Instance. The U.S. Embassy in Luxembourg has chosen the University of Michigan Law School to participate, and University of Michigan law students and alumni are eligible to apply for these stage opportunities. This is a tremendous opportunity to work in the chambers of a Judge or Advocate General of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. The position will provide invaluable insight into the workings of the Court. The work environment is very collegial, as clerks of all chambers spend a good deal of time together within and outside the Court of Justice.

There are two possible Dean Acheson Legal Stage periods for 2007-2008:

Fall Term (mid-September to mid-December)
Spring Term (mid-February to mid-May)

HOW TO APPLY

Michigan applicants must submit their completed applications to the Law School's Center for International & Comparative Law no later than Monday, April 2, 2007. Compliance with the deadline is essential. It is the applicant's responsibility to make sure that his or her application (including letters of reference and transcript) is complete by the deadline. A committee of Law School faculty will decide which applications to nominate to the Court.

Applications are available on the bookshelf outside of The Center for International & Comparative Law. In addition to the application form, you must provide two letters of recommendation as well as a copy of your Law School transcript, your resume and a description of your proficiency, background and experience in one or more foreign languages. We strongly encourage that at least one letter be from a law faculty member and one from an individual with experience in European Community Law. (The latter could, of course, be a law professor.)

The Harry Klein and Shirley Klein Legal Scholarship Fund
One $1,000 Scholarship is open to anyone currently enrolled in a law school in the state of Michigan who demonstrates a desire and ability to aid social service agencies, non-profit and not-for-profit organizations, the disadvantaged and the underprivileged. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office, 310 HH. The application deadline is April 13, 2007.

New York State Senate Fellowships
Several different one-year (maximum) fellowships are available to United States citizens. Fellows must be full-time matriculating graduate students in an accredited university during the immediately previous spring and fall semesters. All Senate fellowships are on-site in Albany, New York. The $32,000 award will be distributed in biweekly installments. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office, 310 HH. The application deadline is April 13, 2007.

Attorney-CPA Foundation Scholarships
The Attorney-CPA Foundation will award fourteen scholarships in amounts ranging from $250 to $1000. The scholarships are open to law students who will be entering their third year of law school and have obtained a CPA certificate. Applicants will be evaluated based upon their academic performance, leadership in the school and community and need for assistance in completing their studies. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office, 310 HH. The application deadline is April 15, 2007.

Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan
The Otis M. Smith Scholarship Program provides scholarships for working single mothers who pursue higher education on at least a half-time basis. Not more than four scholarships of $2,000 will be awarded to successful candidates from select nationally recognized universities: Wayne State University, all campuses of the University of Michigan and the Columbus College of Law at Catholic University Law School. Applicants must be current residents of any of the following counties of southeastern Michigan: Wayne, Oakland, or Macomb. Applications are available online at www.cfsem.org/grants/how_to_apply/PDFs/Otis%20Smith_07.pdf. The application deadline is May 1, 2007.

The Jeptha Wade Schureman Scholarship Program provides children who have lost their fathers because of death or loss of parental rights before reaching the age of majority with a scholarship of $7,500 for use at one of the 15 public universities in Michigan. Applicants must be residents of the following counties at the time of high school graduation: Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, Lenawee, Washtenaw, Livingston or St. Clair. Candidates must also demonstrate financial need, scholastic achievement, leadership and character, and be between the ages of 17 - 27. Stark Community Foundation ­ Sanders J. Mestel Legal Scholarship Fund
Scholarships are available to Stark County, Ohio residents who are entering their final year of law school. Students must be in good academic standing, show financial need and have an interest in trial advocacy. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office, 310 HH. The application deadline is May 1, 2007.

$1,000 Prize For Best Paper On European Integration
The Milton and Miriam Handler Prize will be awarded for the best paper written on European integration by a current University of Michigan Law School J.D. or LL.M. student while enrolled at the Law School. The Prize is for $1,000 and has been made available through the generosity of the Milton and Miriam Handler Foundation.

Deadline: Papers must be submitted by Friday, May 18, 2007, to Stephanie Wiederhold in the Center for International and Comparative Law at the Law School, Room 300D LR in the Reading Room. Please submit two hard copies to Ms. Wiederhold as well as one electronic copy to her by e-mail at wls@umich.edu.

The Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. Scholarship Program
The Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. Scholarship Program promotes academic excellence and diversity in law schools by awarding ten newly accepted law students with scholarships to help defray their educational expenses. The LMJ Scholarships will provide ten selected students with $10,000 a year for three years. In addition, approximately 7-8 students will also receive a one-time scholarship gift of $10,000 in support of their law school education. Student Writing Competitions

2007 International Law Student Essay Contest Deadline: April 1, 2007
The International Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan announces its 2007 International Law Student Essay Contest.

The contest is open to all law students currently enrolled at any Michigan Law School. A first prize of $750.00 and a second prize of $250.00 will be awarded to the students who, in the opinion of the judges, write the best original essays on “The United States and International Law.” Essays may address either the way in which United States courts deal with international legal issues or legal issues arising from aspects of United States foreign policy.

To be considered, essays must be (i) an original work of art not previously published, (ii) submitted via email no later than April 1, 2007, (iii) typewritten and double-spaced, (iii) not in excess of 5,000 words and (iv) fully footnoted in Blue Book style. All rights to publish the articles shall vest in the International Law Section.

In order to have these essays judged objectively, submissions should have all identifying information (name, contact information, and law school affiliation) on a separate cover page. The entries should then be emailed directly to Howard B. Hill, an international law practitioner (howardbhill@comcast.net), who will forward the essays without the identifying information to the two other judges. No entrants shall have any contact concerning this essay contest with any judge other than Mr. Hill.

The prizes will be awarded at the Annual Meeting of the International Law Section in the Fall of 2007 and the winning articles published in the Michigan International Lawyer.

The International Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan provides education, information and analysis to enhance and advance the knowledge and understanding of international legal issues and encourages cordial association and exchange of ideas among those interested in international law related matters through meetings, seminars, public service programs and the Michigan International Lawyer.

Congrats To The Child Welfare Law Moot Court Team

Congratulations to the Child Welfare Law Moot Court Team consisting of Kristen Klanow, Josh McCaleb and Betsey Wiegman. The team finished third in the national competition held in Columbus, Ohio. The team also received an award for writing the third best brief in the competition. Schools from all over the country participated in the competition which focused on the substantive due process rights of putative fathers and the right to counsel in termination of parental rights proceedings. Please congratulate the team on their success.

Call For Proposals For Student-Sponsored Symposia And Conferences For Academic Year 2007-2008

Pursuant to the Law School's policy on student sponsored symposia and conferences, the Law School's Journals and Symposia Committee is calling for proposals for symposia and conferences for Academic Year 2007-2008. Student organizations and publications, as well as any other group of students, who wish to obtain Law School funding for a symposium or conference next year should prepare and submit a proposal to the Committee no later than Friday, March 23, 2007.

Proposals shall include a description of the topic, the format, and the importance of the symposium or conference; a proposed budget; suggested dates; a list of sponsoring individuals and organizations and any special knowledge, expertise, or interest they have in the topic; and a list of suggested speakers and participants. Supporting letters are encouraged, as are suggestions of alternative funding sources that have been approached or will be pursued. Ten copies of each proposal should be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 23, 2007, to Nancy Paul in Room 333 Hutchins Hall. The Journals and Symposia committee will review the proposals and make recommendations to the Dean before the end of the Winter Term. Proposals received after the deadline may not be considered. This year's members of the Journals and Symposia Committee are Associate Kyle Logue (chair), James Amler, Prof. Madeline Kochen, Prof. Joe Vining, Prof. Larry Waggoner, and Leigh Wasserstrom. David Baum, Christine Gregory and Christina Luo serve ex officio.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are planning an event that goes beyond a single speaker or panel in a single room on a single day but are not seeking financial support, please inform the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs no less than 90 days in advance to ensure that your event can be accommodated in the Law School calendar.
