Anthony Montero ('95) is a Special Agent at the FBI assigned to the Securities & Financial Crime Squad, International Finance and Terrorism Squad and the Corporate Crime Squad in Los Angeles. On loan currently to the U.S. Attorney's Office Major Frauds Section, Mr. Montero will talk to students about his work at both agencies and his path to those jobs. All students welcome. Perspectives on Judicial Clerkships

Why clerk? What is the difference between clerking for an appellate judge and a trial judge? What is a bankruptcy clerkship like? Is it worth clerking if I don't want to litigate? Can I obtain a clerkship if I'm not Law Review? What is the value of a state court clerkship? What do magistrate judges do and what are those clerkships like? Hear the real scoop* (WMA file - Kerberos authentication required) from a distinguished panel of Michigan Law alums who discuss their clerkships and why you should apply for one of the best jobs in law.

Panelists include:

Anthony Montero, '95, Special Agent, FBI, Securities and Financial Crime Squad, International Financing and Terrorism, and Corporate Crime Squad. Anthony is currently on special assignment as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, Major Frauds Section in Los Angeles.  He clerked after law school for the Hon. John E. Ryan, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Central District of California at the time the judge presided over In re County of Orange, the largest municipal bankruptcy filing ever.

Bryce Pilz, '00, Assistant General Counsel, Office of the General Counsel and Office of Technology Transfer, University of Michigan. Bryce clerked for the Hon. Amy J. St. Eve, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Before returning to the U of M, Bryce was an associate at Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago.

Veronica Vela, '02, Associate, Simpson Thacher, New York. Veronica clerked for U.S. Magistrate Judge Frank Maas, Southern District of New York; and, District Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle, Eastern District of Louisiana.

A Conversation with Chief Judge Steven Rhodes, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan

Hear* (WMA file - Kerberos authentication required) Chief Judge Steven Rhodes talk with students about clerkships, the types of cases that arise at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, and his own career path to the judiciary. After graduating from UMLS, Judge Rhodes clerked for the Hon. John Feikens, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan; served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan; was in private practice at a law firm; and, served as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan. Judge Rhodes began service as a bankruptcy judge for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in 1985. He was appointed Chief Judge in 2002. Judge Rhodes was also appointed to the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel for the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. He has been an adjunct professor at UMLS, is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, and is the author of many publications on bankruptcy law.  All students are welcome.  Lunch will be served.

State Court Clerkships

State court clerkships are found at both trial and appellate levels and deal with a wide range of subjects-everything from contract and tort disputes, to divorce, custody and probate issues. Often overlooked by students in the clerkship hunt, most legal disputes in the U.S. are handled in state courts and these clerkships provide excellent educational and mentoring experiences.  Hear* (WMA file - Kerberos authentication required) a panel of UMLS alums describe their experiences clerking for judges in state trial, appellate, and specialty courts. Open to all students.

Panelists include:

Assistant Professor Madeline Kochen
Professor Kochen earned her B.A., magna cum laude, and her J.D. from Yeshiva University (Cardozo law School). She holds an A.M. in Near Eastern languages and civilizations and a Ph.D. in religion and political  philosophy from Harvard University. Prof. Kochen worked in New York as a criminal appeals attorney with the Legal Aid Society, as a staff attorney and legislative counsel with the ACLU, and founded and directed the NYCLU Women's Rights/Reproductive Rights Project. She has taught at Stanford, Harvard and and spent three years at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. From 1989 to 1992 Profesor Kochen was the law assistant to Acting Justice Elliot Wilk of the New York Supreme Court.
 
John Fedynsky, ’04, is a former Research Attorney for the Michigan Court of Appeals, in Detroit and in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  John is currently in his second clerkship to the Hon. Robert J. Cleland, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. 
 
Beth Koivunen Wickwire, ’02, was a clerk to two Michigan judges: the Hon. Joseph P. Swallow (now retired), and the Hon. John F. Kowalski (still on the bench), from Michigan's 26th Judicial Circuit Court. Beth served for a two-year term immediately following graduation. She is currently an associate at the Kitch Law Firm in Ann Arbor.
