Judicial Clerkships

Michigan has a strong tradition of sending its graduates to prestigious judicial clerkships in federal, state appellate, and state trial courts. Our graduates have served as judicial clerks in every circuit in the country. And further, since 1991, Michigan Law has been the top public law school for United States Supreme Court Clerkships, placing 23 graduates in this prestigious position.

Judicial Clerkship Database
Our Web-based judges database allows student and alumni users to search by judge name, judge ID number, court name, city, and state. Users can save their search results into a shopping cart to create mail-merged letters and labels for the judicial clerkship application process.  The database also includes a library of information about alums' clerkship experiences.  (Access limited to current University of Michigan Law Students, Staff, and Alumni only with University uniqnames and passwords. Alums without uniqnames/passwords should request one at the Alum Network Web site.)

Judicial Clerkship Registration
Students and alumni who are applying for judicial clerkships for the 2009 Term should also complete our Registration Form.

Judicial Clerkship Handbook
We have developed a guide geared towards helping students and alumni with the judicial clerkship application process. Additional appendixes include:

Students who have interviewed with judges are asked to fill out the Judicial Clerkship Interview Feedback form. This information is extremely valuable to both current and future clerkship applicants.

Alums who have completed a clerkship are invited to submit a confidential feedback form on their clerkship. In the alternative, you may submit your clerkship comments via e-mail to lawcareers@umich.edu or mail them directly to OCS.

Judicial Clerkship E-mail Group and Counseling
Current University of Michigan law student and alumni can join an e-mail group to receive clerkship notices, recent judicial confirmations, and application information directly from the Office of Career Services. To join, please send an e-mail to Tammy Sindlinger at sindling@umich.edu with your name, unique name, graduation date, and if you are a current 2L or 3L student.  The list is not open to 1L students.

Students may also schedule a counseling appointment with Robin Kaplan, Attorney-Counselor and Clerkship Advisor, or with Susan Guindi or Carolyn Spencer to discuss their judicial clerkship application strategy. Simply call OCS at 734.764.0546 to arrange an appointment time.
