SUMMARY:Defendants Venessa Lopes and Raphael Mello, both Brazilian nationals, pled guilty to the sex trafficking of adult women from Brazil. The eleven victims, all female, were recruited through the internet and coerced into performing commercial sex acts by threat of deportation. Defendants ran the prostitution ring out of their apartments in the Boston area and also forced the women to work in hotels in the New England area. Defendants pled guilty to sex trafficking and other related charges. Lopes was sentenced to 20 months imprisonment and Mello was sentenced to time served plus 36 months supervised release.
