SUMMARY:In 2002, Stokes traveled from Chicago to Thailand, where he lived for several years, to have sex with minors. Stokes was convicted in a June 2010 trial, following his extradition from Thailand. The jury found that Stokes traveled overseas with the “significant purpose” of engaging in sex with minors. Evidence at the trial showed that Stokes engaged in sexual conduct with more than 70 boys, most of whom were under 16, and about half of whom were under 12 at the time. Two victims, who were 11 at the time, traveled from Thailand to Chicago and testified at the trial. They testified regarding Stokes's practice of inviting them to his home to play video games, giving them a place to sleep and to shower, engaging in oral sex with them, and taking sexually explicit photographs. Stokes was sentenced to 180 months, the statutory maximum in effect at the time of the crimes.
