SUMMARY:Defendant Maria Terechina, a Russian born U.S. national, conspired with at least six others to recruit women from Eastern Europe to work in hotel and laundry businesses in Columbus, Ohio. Others delivered the workers to her in an arrangement that started in 1999 and lasted 8 years. Upon the workers' arrival in Columbus, Terechina held the workers in a condition of debt bondage and involuntary servitude by withholding salaries, claiming they owed between $600 and $1000 for travel as well as living expenses, and withholding their passports. Terechina pled guilty to conspiring to defraud the government and conduct human trafficking and was sentenced to 12 months in prison.
