SUMMARY:Evelyn Pelayo, 51, was indicted on charges that she, along with the other three named defendants, recruited workers in the Philippines to come and work in the nursing homes she owned in California. Upon the workers' arrival to the U.S., Pelayo took away their passports and other documents and threatened that if they told anyone about their working conditions or tried to leave, she would contact immigration authorities to have them deported. Defendant Pelayo plead guilty to charges of "Forced Labor" and "Unlawful Conduct with Documents in Furtherance of Forced Labor". Pelayo is awaiting sentencing.
