SUMMARY:Between 2000 and 2008, Defendant Soripada Lubis harbored up to 11 victims, all Indonesian women, in his basement. Some of the victims had entered the U.S. legally but had overstayed or violated their visas, while others had entered the U.S. illegally. Defendant initially approached the women using information he obtained from his contacts at the Indonesian Embassy, promising them "higher pay and less work. . ." Defendant then provided the victims with jobs as housekeepers while they stayed in his basement, charging them $375/month for rent and transportation, plus additional "taxes." Some of the women slept three to a bed. Defendant dissuaded the victims from leaving by restraining their movement, holding their passports, threatening to deport them, and threatening to harm their families in Indonesia. In addition, he sexually assaulted the victims, threatening to accuse them of promiscuity to their Indonesian families if they refused to comply. Defendant was sentenced to 3 years of probating and fined $2,000.
