SUMMARY:

Defendants Arlan and Linda Kaufman, husband and wife, operated a residential home for mentally ill patients in Butler County, Kansas.  In 2004 the Kaufmans were arrested after a three-year investigation, which began when police observed two men under Arlan Kaufmna’s supervision working in the nude.  Evidence presented at trial revealed that Arlan Kaufman coerced patients into performing sexual acts on one another, which he then videotaped. In addition to psychologically manipulating patients, the Kaufmans used physical coercion, including beatings and stun guns, to force patients to engage in sexually explicit behavior and to perform manual labor on the Kaufman’s farm.

The Kaufman’s were convicted by a federal jury on numerous counts, including involuntary servitude. Arlan Kaufman was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment. Linda Kaufman was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
