Environmental Law and Policy Program
The Environmental Law and Policy Program at the University of Michigan promotes scholarship, teaching, and interdisciplinary programs to address the myriad challenges facing our global environment. ELPP draws on the Law School’s rich tradition in environmental and natural resources law, which dates to the early years of the environmental movement in the United States, and builds on the University of Michigan’s outstanding interdisciplinary and dual degree programs with the School of Natural Resources and the Environment, the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, the Ross School of Business, and the School of Public Health. ELPP started in July 2007 and has re-established Michigan Law as one of the top environmental law programs in the United States through an expanded curriculum, acclaimed lecture series, and annual fall conference on environmental law.
FACULTY
Our diverse environmental law faculty includes professors who have served in senior posistions at the White House, the Environmental and Natural Resources Division of the United States Department of Justice, the Michigan Attorney General's Office, the National Wildlife Federation, the National Environmental Law Center, and in private practice. They are nationally and internationally recognized experts on environmental regulation, global climate change, water law, environmental criminal enforcement, international law, Indian law, alternative dispute resolution, conservation, and land use law.
Program Director
David M. Uhlmann, the Director of the Environmental Law and Policy Program, is the Jeffrey F. Liss Professor from Practice. Professor Uhlmann, who teaches Environmental Law and Policy, Environmental Crimes, and Advanced Environmental Law, is responsible for the leadership and development of the Environmental Law and Policy Program. Prior to joining the Michigan faculty, Professor Uhlmann served for 17 years in the United States Department of Justice, the last seven as Chief of the Environmental Crimes Section, where he was the country’s top environmental crimes prosecutor.
