Who: Covenant House Michigan
provides hope to homeless, runaway and at-risk youth ages 13-22. They provide shelter, educational and vocational programs, as well as other support services, to help overcome hurdles such as homelessness, unemployment, inadequate education, violence, drugs and gangs. Their goal is to redirect them onto a path toward meaningful and successful adulthood. Covenant House Michigan is a sanctuary for young people who have nowhere to go. Youth come from all over Michigan searching for a way out of their desperate situations.
When: Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please arrive at 9:45 a.m. ready-to-work.
What: We will be helping Covenant House with several projects. One is organizing their Clothing Closet – hanging, sorting and labeling donated clothes and other items. We will also be repairing a fence and painting inside the school on campus.
Where: 2959 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd., Detroit, MI 48208 (313)463-2000. Volunteers will check-in at the security gate. Team Leaders Shelly Miller '92 and Yasmin Elias '95 will be there to greet you.
What to Bring: Volunteers are welcome to bring items for a Clothes and Needed Items Drive to donate to the Clothing Closet on May 4. Their wish list includes:
New or gently used clothing for boys and girls ages 13-22
Umbrellas – travel size preferable
Bath towels/Face cloths
Ladies Bras (all sizes up to ddd)
Flip flops/shower shoes (M- XXL)
Men’s White undershirts & A Shirt – (sizes S to XL and up)
Men’s boxers (S, M, L, XL, XXL and up)
Ladies underwear (all sizes include plus sizes)
Men’s & Women’s pajamas (sizes M, L & XL and up)
Shoes & boots for men & women – all sizes
Socks (sport/dress for men & women)
Gift Cards to purchase clothing & emergency items (Target, Wal-Mart, Meijer)
***Please no hotel samples***
Volunteers may also bring a bottle of water for their personal use during the volunteer activity.
Additional Information: All Volunteers must be at least 18. If you want to paint or fix the fence, please dress appropriately. Lunch will be provided on-site by the Office of Development and Alumni Relations.
