Who: We will be volunteering with More Than Words. MTW is a social enterprise that empowers youth who are in the foster care system, court involved, homeless or out of school to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business. Youth work as a team to manage their own retail and online book business, café, and community space while developing employment skills, leadership, and self-confidence.

What: Volunteers will be working alongside youth “prescanning” books – scanning books ISBN code to determine whether the book will be accepted into their online inventory. This task may even turn into a prescanning battle amongst our volunteers!

When: Saturday, May 3, 2014, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Please arrive by 10:30 a.m. ready to work.

Where: More Than Words is located at 242 East Berkeley Street, Boston 02118 on the 2nd floor of the Medieval Manor building. The location is accessible by MBTA. Parking at the facility is limited. Carpooling is encouraged. There is a parking garage a block away at Stanhope Garage, 60 East Berkeley (617-338-7396) for $15 a day.

What to bring: Dress comfortably – jeans and sneakers are fine! If desired, please bring a water bottle for your personal use during the volunteer activity.

Additional information: We will be working alongside the youth of More Than Words. Please feel free to ask them questions and be engaged throughout the volunteer project. There is not an age limit for volunteering with this project, but minors should be accompanied by a chaperone. All volunteers will receive a 20% discount in the bookstore should you wish to make a purchase during your visit. Lunch will be provided by the Office of Development and Alumni Relations at the end of the volunteer shift.
